At the rate cyclists seem to be arming themselves these days taxi drivers should start to be scared of us!

I carry often when I ride, especially if on the MTB between the small-holdings.  I don't carry a .45 but a .40, though the calibre does not have much to do with how concealable the weapon is.  If the weapon sits at about 5 o'clock it is hidden behind your back pocket fairly well.  The only people who've yet realized that I carry are those who know me well.

 

Remember that if you carry, things can escalate much faster than if you don't.  If you pull a gun first, the taxi driver can easily plead self-defence if he or his mate killed you.  A gun is there to protect your life, not to teach taxi drivers lessons with. 

 

I've found that I'm much more keen on avoiding even verbal confrontation when carrying.  A firearm is responsibility, and never to be taken up lightly.

 

Please, don't get yourself killed or in jail because you want to teach a taxi driver a lesson!

This the last thing i would suggest. Not everyone is Rambo and you just might get yourself killed. I understand theach urge to break his mirror, but two wrongs does not make a right!!! Do not engage any other road user guys, you are going to get yourself killed. As for advocating getting a gun to resolve situationso like this...do this and I give you 6 months before you are killed or in prison. Guys a firearm is ment to DEFEND THE LIFE OF YOURSELF OR SOMEONE CLOSE TO YOU and that is ALL! If you start waving it around to intimate others because they have wronged you, I hope for your sake we don't ever cross paths because if someone points a firearm at me I WILL point mine back together with some index finger action.

I've learnt after several times refusing to be used for their illegal gain, that its just bark and zero bite, heck, my last time i succeeded in causing a taxi to slam brakes and stop trying to speed around me (lol please, unroadworthiny vehicles cant accelerate faster than my skedonk) was just yesterday morning - will do it again this evening if opportunity presents itself.

 

 

 

 

taxi's in port elizabeth university way have aimed at me while i was cycling. since then, i've succeeded in costing them more time (and time while working is money) than if the scum never tried intimidating me (and failing) in the first place.

It is not only aggresive responses that worsen cyclest-taxi relations, its the cowards that accept abuse and give the taxi's an easy victory that are worsening as well.

 

 

 

 

what if the taxi that you meekly submitted to goes and runs over a child inexperienced with cycling? heck, what if the taxi runs over an innocent child crossing the street? 

Be the father of the country, not just your own children. As long as criminals are allowed victories, they will continue taking bigger and bigger chances.

Taxi drivers are also people and not all of them carry guns. If they resort to violence you can get their pdp revoked. However the situation was provoked a little with the mirror slap but also due to circumstances. In the end its just a big ass headache!!

I will admit I hit the back/side panel of a taxi blocking the way at a 4-way intersection. Stupid! It was a tense minute as I made sure I got away quickly and kept looking back to see if he'd come after me. As many have pointed out it's just not worth it and the important thing is I'm alive.
