Today I was giving the steed a clean and noticed that one of my rear spokes is broken - detached at the hub end. I'm clueless about this sort of thing. Is it fixable? What's the procedure? And I'm guessing I shouldn't be riding until it's sorted?

Yes it is fixable.

Take it to your LBS.

They will fit a new spoke and true the wheel again.

Unless you have the correct length spokes lying around at home ... LBS

Unless its a set of wheels like mavic crossmax that use expensive spokes.

Thats if you can find spokes.

Thanks, guys. You know what that would cost roughly?

Spoke R9-00 (straight guage) or R16-00 (double butted). True about R45-00. There may be other spokes damaged if it is on the drive side and the chain has come off between the cassette and spokes. Also spokes break from fatigue so if any others break soon it may be time for a re spoke or new wheel. If you bring it to me I can assess it for you.

EISH!!! I need to get a spoke for my SLR wheel. Last time I broke one it cost my +-R135 for just the bladed spoke. Hope I can get some before the Trailseeker next week.

Mine is a 29er Alex rim (yeah I hear they suck but it's what came with the bike) so hoping it's not too pricey?

Not all of them suck. The higher end ones or really solid. And weight wise for e.g., Alex SX44 is 520gr for the hoop only, apparently the ZTR Crest is about 395gr with a weight limit.

paid R7 for a spoke for the same rim at Solomons, used the spoke wrench on my multitool to fix it - trued it with a toothpick presticked to the fork - a load of the spokes had become loose, so tightened em up (have proper wheel building kit now, so dont hate)

replaced the alexrims soon after... have the old spokes lying around at home, pm me if you don't come right
