Hi all, I know this topic has been around but bear with me :D

I am currently running front blades 26 and 38, with a 34-11 cassette. And Am in need of a new drive terrain, so I am going for a 36/11 cassette, But don’t know what CHAIN GEAR 30t or 32t??

When I am in my second lowest gear that is 30t and my 26t in front, it is 0.87 turn per stroke, and I manage to get everywhere with that.

Now my Question is must I get a 30t or 32t?

With the 30T my granny will be doing 0.83 per stroke and with the 32T 0.89 per stroke. Ialso don't want to spin out to badly.

I am not sure what to take, can anyone please give me advice on what will work best?

Thanks!!!!!!

You will need to make the call based upon how strong a rider you are.

I run a 30t on my 29er and 32t on my 26 inch bike but I am not a particularly strong rider.

I am running a 34t on my 26er and have a 11-40 10sp at the back. I have cycled up some pretty big hills and haven't needed the 40 yet. Got it there as a bail out gear and I am sure I will use it and look for more in a hilly race. Go 32 else you will be spinning out a lot.

I Wouldn't go 30t. Within a month you'll be buying bigger... I train with a 36t, and race on either 36, 34,or 32. Depending on how much climbing there is. Basically, it's not about needing lighter gears, but more about being able to rest / recover if you want to.

Thanks guys!

I think I’ll go with the 32t on my 29er, will just have to get used to it but should not take that long.

I'm looking forward to it now

Still waiting for my order, know the following question has started to bug me, how much weight will I save, as I have XT shifter, FD and 2 XT blades and with the cable hosing and cable gone.

Any estimation from anyone?

As for the weight saving, I guesstimated mine at about 400grams, removing a SLX FD and SLX shifter + cables and then installing a Raceface 32 TWN.

Looked up the FD and shifter as well as Raceface weight, so should be pretty close.

Ok So after waiting for a week for my Chaining that was on order I decided to cancel it, I am now going to order one from Dale from Kitted, that is proudly made South African. It is also much cheaper then Race Face.

30 front and 11-36 in the back. Spin out on 37km/h but still have a bail gear if the day gets tough. No chain guide on NW chainring up front

Wolfie1 Would you upgrade to a 32t or will you just keep the 30t? Do you spin out a lot or is it at a minimum?

This 1x10 thing is not a one size fits all solution. I'm sure you've figured that. You need to take an honest look at your fitness, riding habits and riding locations. You can extend your cassette with one of those 42 teeth guys giving you more of a range allowing you to run a bigger ring up front.

I personally run a 30 up front and a 42-11 in the rear. But I'm fat, my bike is heavy and I hate riding uphill. I also hate jeeptrack. See? Honesty. My logic on my AM bike is if I'm spinning out I should be on my DH bike anyway.

I took a 36 with a chainguide for the front to France cos the riding there is more gravity based and I didn't want to spin out. The trails are way more rough hence the chainguide.

If you run a NW with a clutch derailleur you shouldn't need a chain guide.

Hope that helps.
