Meerendal MTB

I'll say it again... without the Epic sections, Meerendal is mostly plain boring and over weekends it is too busy. I decided a month ago to stop riding there. I would rather ride @ Conties and Hoogekraal, or Hillcrest and Bloemendal (if I feel like climbing). Over weekends, I would say Welvanpas, Rhebokskloof or the likes, should keep things interesting. TBMC is also currently building more trail at Bloemendal, with the help of the G-spot builder. Looks like this will become their new centrepiece trail.

I wouldn't say its boring, but yeah, its no conties or hoogekraal.

All good in their own way and have their time and place.

Eish, I wouldn't exactly say boring - maybe more aimed at the beginner cyclist...

Nowadays I also prefer the other more demanding Tygerberg trails but I learned the ropes there so good memories...

Still ride it sometimes if I only have an quick hour before/after work to ride, a quick up & down Dorstberg always put a smile on my face.

What I like about Meerendal is feeling safe there if one goes riding alone -

Can anyone comment regarding the safety (as in crime) regarding riding the other TBMC trails alone?

I ride them alone all the time... I don't see any reason to feel unsafe on any of the farm trails.

Very true, have never felt unsafe on any of the trails by myself, even at the crack of dawn.

One time a cow and I surprised the hell out of each other on Hoogekraal, not sure who got more of a fright, but other than that, all good.

Only crime ever reported was a smash and grab in the hoogekraal parking lot from a parked vehicle.

Great stuff, thanks for the replies. Makes me all warm and fuzzy as we are truly blessed with the best trails in SA :D

Only crime ever reported was a smash and grab in the hoogekraal parking lot from a parked vehicle.

And a bike rack nicked at Conties but now with the new parking I don't think that will ever be an issue again.

Someone left his keys on his car wheel (to hide them ) at Meerendal and had his car cleaned out - but don't think that was a bright idea leaving the keys there.

And a couple of smashed windows at the bottom of Majik - but the Protea hotel allows cyclists to park in their fenced grounds so also can be avoided.

As for Cycling alone - never felt unsafe as a Woman alone on Meerendal - even before the big fence went up. Of all the trails to me it's the safest in that respect - even from an injury point of view as it's a fairly small area it covers and there is always activity on the farm and well populated with Cyclists ( and these days Trail runners and Horse riders too) so if you land in a sticky situation you shouldn't be alone for long :)

Okay, I said here that I won't ride there again, but I decided to go up Dorstberg tonight. The trails are looking much better, all sections of trail was open and I actually really enjoyed the ride. Also got PR's on almost every single section... Balls to the wall!!!

So epic sections open? Nice, have missed them...

Probably not Deanbean. We're still trying to get the day permit arrangements finalised but with each land owner wanting a "slice of the cake" it is looking like it may be a bit expensive to get a day permit if you're going to ride the trails frequently while you are here. That said, if you prefer paying a day permit fee for specific trails, Contermanskloof (currently R30 per day) and Hooggekraal (R30) both can give you a reasonable ride on their own.

Awesome, I see you have a holiday membership. I'll take one out as I'll be staying in Protea Valley over Xmas
