Is it ok that a LBS quotes you a certain amount for a job and then once it is done charges you almost double?

For example:(happened to my Bro)

Took a wheelset to LBS to have new rims fitted (He provided the rims Stans Crest to Arches)

Was Quoted R 400 per wheel (was told new nipples required which was fine)

Was happy with the quote and gave the go ahead.

Yesterday gets a call saying wheels are ready and the bill is R1300.

He says he had to replace a few spokes which was done but not cleared by my bro.

Now he leaves for 3towers on Thursday which the mech was fully aware of and has no choice but to cough up another $500 or not have a wheelset for the weekend.

Not Square!!!!!!

thats more than a few spokes in rands!

I hear this all the time,

This happened to a friend of mine a short while ago.

friend calls shop....how much for a fork service.

"which one sir"

Fox revolution bla bla

"R650 you bring the fork only, or R780 if you drop the bike off and we need to remove it and replace the fork"

Friend drops of fork.

"you fork is ready sir"

Thanks please send your banking details

Days go past......

friend calls shop again,

Shop sends invoice

"R900"

Why is it now R900?

"Because it is a fox sir"

But I told you that in the first place

"oh, I quoted you on a Rock Shox,"

"ok R700 then"

The point is not the cost or the fact that spokes had to be replaced.

The point is you get hit with an unexpected bill.

I'm sure my bro would have OKed it had they just phoned and said "look we have to replace spokes it is going to be an extra X rondts."

Not to get a call after the work was done to say he has to now fork out an extra R500.

  1. not if the ERD of the rims is similar. (which they are)
  2. the wheelset is new (which it is only about 400km old)
  3. the guy doing the job confirmed that he would not need to replace spokes once he had seen the wheel. (now i understand that some spokes might need replacing, fair enough but R500 worth?)

(guess it is just easier and quicker to cut the rim off the Hub)

Not really actually ,it's quicker to put the two rims together and do a straight transplant.

Yip...really about keeping him in the loop. Your boet is an honest good oke. It just feels like being taken for a ride eventhough there might have been additional costs involved as the job started...it happens, and sure he would have said no sweat, carry on.

I think its pretty obvious NO its not ok considering the original amount "quoted"

Which shop was it?

There is a difference between a quotation and an estimate..... (Sounds like they gave an estimate...)

If they had seen the wheelset and quoted accordingly then stick to the original quote.

They should have quoted accordingly and at the same time advised the customer that there may be an additional charge for spokes and nipples etc due to damage whilst stripping the rim.

I have found that dealing with LBS seems to be different to dealing with other service providers. Not pointing fingers at anybody but generally speaking, people seem to be a bit more relaxed with their dealings....

Any other place would have me asking for a quote to do XYZ with a breakdown of costs. That eliminates any bull when it comes time to pay.

Perhaps LBS are understaffed or are limited by time, but sound business practice would eliminate a lot of the surprises.

I recently had the opposite experience at my local LBS, got a quote for my spez brain to go for a service in Cape town. I paid R150.00 LESS when I collected my bike PLUS they had sorted out the stripped rivots for my bottle cage. PLUS my bike had been washed and polished that it looked like new. :)

As an aside to this - what is the purpose of a quote? To get an indication of the cost or to get the actual cost that you can hold the company to?

Is this not the difference between a pro forma and a quote?

On the other hand, if quoted a price, and things start to go way over the quote, a phone call to said customer usually helps smooth things over. Communication and managing expectations !

Being Blondie does have its advantages i guess...

Wonder how much it would have cost Chainsaw?

Your LBS deserves a +1 plug

In December I sent a wheel in a for a rebuild to one of the only LBS's with an open workshop between Christmas and New Years (ie. they would not have been ,my first choice).

The build over cost was a little on the steep side but not unheard of. But similar to the OP's brother, the final cost was a fair amount more than initailly stated.

These additional costs were itemized as follows:

  • Cleaning the wheel - R80 (seems excessive for washing just a wheel, half of which, ie. the rim, is being removed anyway.
  • Tubeless Conversion - R200-ish (I did not ask for this. I would have done it myself. And they used duct tape. Seriously... R200-odd for Duct tape?!)

Anyway, because I was going down to Karkloof a day or so later, I just paid up and took the wheel.

Surprise surprise when a week later half the spokes came loose. They clearly forgot to charge for linseed oil.
