Hi All,

I was hoping some bike guru on the forum could help we with dating this bike. Its a Cadex Carbon Fibre CFR. The attached pics aren't great but they are the best I have for now. The bike seemed to have been my grandfathers and he passed away in the 1990's.

Any information will be appreciated.

Date of manufacture?

What is it worth?

It is worth fixing up?

What components does it have?

Are there spares available?

What is its relationship with Giant?

etc.

Grant

It's an early 90's frame, prob round '91 or '92 if I go by the CFM 2 Cadex mountain bikes we have. Cadex was made by Giant and were some of the first mass produced carbon frames around. Unfortunately not really worth big bucks, I'll take it off your hands though if it's taking up wall space, always wanted a CFR (Carbon Fibre Road) to go with my old mountain bike.

As for components, read what is scribed on the parts.

Thanks Aloutte3. That narrows it down a bit for me. Bike is hanging on the wall of my brothers garage. Ill probably go pick it up and then decide what to do with it. It I decide to scrap it, I'll let you know.

From looking at the pic i can tell you that it has older shimano 105 parts on, I see front is still a frame shifter and rear is a STI, but cannot make out model, probably a sora or just maybe an older 105. The wheels are Regida DP18 laced to Older 105 hubs, those where some sturdy wheels back then. Seems like the bike was a good mid price range build. Probably was bought with only frame shifters and the STI was an Upgrade/ad-on later on.

Looks like it has Shimano 105sc, Cream in colour. Was the first 105 groupset to have dual pivot brake callipers.

Early '90's model frame.

Nice bikes in their day, my brother still has his one, my old man rides it.

Thanks to all that replied. Amazing knowledge base. Its like a mystery novel unraveling. Based on what has been said, I think I'll spend a little money on it and see how it rides - just for the hell of it.

Comfy ride, you might decide to keep riding it.

Lovely bikes

We have 2 of the 26 inch mountain bike versions, one of them actually in the same matching red. Not great on the mountain by today's standards but we have put road slicks on them and use them for fun training rides and the Mass. I've even done a sub 4 hr Argus on it!

Alouette3. That's cool. Sounds like fun. I'll have to go pick it up this weekend and get it to the LBS for a service. What do you think a good amount of money is to spend on get it going? I was thinking maybe a 2k - 3k? I suspect the BB will need some work, perhaps a new chain, cables checked, handle bars tapped. Not sure what condition the tires are in.

R2-3k probably not even worth it with mechanic fees etc added. For that money you can pick up a half decent second hand bike here.

Buy some new grip tape, and maybe tires. Will make for a good fairly cheap weekend build/ service diy project. Repack the bearings, service the cables etc, you should be able to to get it ridable without having to spend much, but getting your hands dirty. I've even taken some of those older BB's apart and resurrected them.

My son will enjoy that! I think ill do the basics myself and leave the BB to the guys who know what they are doing!
