The sad thing about this cartoon is not its arguably (depending on your point of view) poor taste, it is the inherently negative view of Johannesburg that so many people apparently identify with. It won the competition after all.

Cycling safety is a serious matter, no doubt, but the overly emotional responses on this thread to a silly cartoon leave me wondering if people don't have enough to worry about.

There is so much negativity in SA already without people looking for things to be offended about. Sweating the small stuff is what is straining the fabric of our society and putting everyone on edge unnecessarily.

Cartoon ?

Maybe, just maybe like yourself and most people it all went horribly lost in translation when the group who sit on the side of the "not offended" fence failed to recall that 94.7 are the media sponsor of one of the biggest road races in the country, and maybe (just maybe) most people are offended that they even let something so insensitive get approved for general public voting.

Not talking about issues like this is not going to stop cycle accident or deaths, not fix the taxi or pothole problems, or have animals transported more securely. By pretending we live in a perfect world with perfect conditions are like the "hear no evel, say no evel, see no evel" monkeys. Let's not try and hide or sweep these everyday problems effecting each and every one of us in some way under the carpet, but look at constructive ways to make it better. This cartoon might not have been to the majorities liking, but it created more awairnes than any other road cicyling body, or group done lately.

Evil .

And it's  an illustration not a cartoon.

As for the awareness and groups, bicyclesafetysa has done more for the awareness of cycling safety than any radio station or cycling body in this country.

it raises safety awareness.

Yes, we needed this comical picture to remind us to smile the next time we get hit by a taxi as, if someone catches it on film, we could end up with prize money.

Legends like Burry getting killed by taxis raises awareness, not some insensitive , money making cartoon.

Accept all comments regarding this being in bad taste but should also look inside the cycling community for similarly inappropriate comments, see below excerpt from email from our friends at CWC

Dear Cyclist

Summer has officially arrived, which of course means no more cycling in the rain or cold!

It’s good to be alive - unless, of course, you’re Shrien Dewani. The Briton is finally going to court for the alleged murder of his wife, Anni Dewani. Now the question is will he or won’t he need a bucket?”

A cartoon is an illustration.

It is very sad that such a sad and depressing picture / art work got people voting.

I would think that you would vote for something that makes you happy.... ?

This does not conjure up feelings of happiness.

True.

Digital illustration, does that make you happy now ?

It seems to me, Wyatt, that you were the one arguing the (somewhat irrelevant) semantics of this, so the question is are YOU happy now?

Immensely, especially seeing the fact that I argued more than scemantics ,especially the part where mention was made that the sh€t illustration did more for cycling safety than any group in this country .

Thanks for asking.

I see now what side of the fence you are on, makes sense.

"Hi mrs. Brian , your husband was killed by a taxi today, but don't sweat the small stuff"
