Given the Burry tragedy, this really ain't funny. Bit like joking about the gas chambers. You don't. There is no humour to be had.

Where do you get the idea that it was meant to be funny?

That's a different question fyi........from the satirical cartoon

"FYI" what is for my information ?

Then the same answer applies .

People got the idea that it was meant to be funny from the actual picture.

See what I did there ?

'cos (in my eyes, at least) it highlights all that is wrong with SA at the moment...

Oh I see, it highlights all that is wrong in S.A. at the moment and then it raises awareness..........

Cyclist smiling being knocked over by a taxi, yes I can see how that works .

It raised a huge amount of awareness .

No ....but you are making a good job of trying to get the last word in....

Not at all, I don't subscribe to your petty thought pattern.

You asked a question and I asked the same question.

But maybe that is the point. The satire is that they expected people to provide shiny, happy pictures of how wonderful their city is. This picture is very sarcastic. "Yay! Another day where cyclists get knocked over by taxis, potholes get so big kids can play in them, giraffes get killed on the highway and taxis drive like dogs! Yay!" If you interpret the picture like that, as many other people have as well, then the guy that edited it all together quite cleverly is actually making a point in defense of cyclists.

Last word.

You win

Yay mr. Driver, please knock me over.

Why because I myself and most hubbers don't interpret it the same way you and a handful of others have ?

I guess the image was removed because 94.7 were bullied in to doing so.

In a certain way, yes. It may raise awareness in avenues where your @bicyclesafetysa doesn't reach, but then again it will only raise awareness if people view it as a satirical take on what the artists "My 94.7" is - a city (country) where people play in potholes filled with water, taxi drivers drive like dogs, cyclists get knocked over and we're all just along for the ride.

If people view it as "funny" and then don't get a bit (a lot) upset about why it's like this, and ask themselves how they can change it (through avenues like yours, increasing awareness and lobbying for a safer environment as well as increasing safety) then what does that say about the population as a whole?

I don't for one minute think it was meant as a funny piece, and believe that the artist meant to actually give the readers a shock - much like Zapiro does with his cartoons (JZ raping Lady Justice, the Ganesh / ICC cartoon etc) and get us to actually think about what he's depicting in the cartoon / illustration.

The truth is, though, that the illustration IS a depiction of what is happening in SA at the moment. Maybe the reason it was voted for by the public was because it hit so many people in places that they identified with... Certain parts of it humorous (the pothole swimming pool) while others deeply sinister (the cyclist being knocked over by a dog of a taxi driver, and the depiction of the giraffe)

I think it's still an area that needs a lot of debate, and a lot of constructive work in order to near some sort of acceptable standard. Lots of things are changing regarding cyclist safety here in CT, through the expansion of cycling lanes and so on. You kick-started the bicyclesafetysa initiative through your work with Carte Blanche, the cops and your slot on Mix FM each week - it's all part of the picture. We need to change the way the artist sees "his 94.7" - through activism, lobbying, and so on...

But yeah. To claim that it's the SINGLE biggest contributor to cycle safety is a bit laughable.
