Any Garmin / Stages boffins out there?

My 500, after never missing a beat once, has developed issues since installing a Stages power meter. I installed the power meter, just to test. Set it up according to instructions, it calibrated perfectly, went for a test ride, all good.

Next ride, I switched it on, it showed 2 immediate error messages ~ "multiple power meters detected", and "multiple hr sensors detected". I reset it, everything started working fine, however, I noticed that my heart rate was exceptionally high. Only worked out later that it was reading my daughters HR sensor, as she was riding with me. So it detected my power meter, but her HR, despite the fact that I was wearing my HR strap and she was 3 metres away when I switched on the head unit.

Anyway, got home, reset everything from scratch, tested it, all good, all working.

Next ride, offloaded the bike, switched on the 500, immediate error message, but this time only "multiple power meters detected". It then would not display power at all, I had to reset it from scratch.

I was under the impression that once the Garmin bonds with a sensor, it stays bonded, and won't link to another sensor. Clearly that isn't the case, and it's damn irritating.

Any suggestions?

What version of SW are you running on the Garmin 500?

No idea, will need to check. What should it be, and how do I upgrade it if necessary?

Should be the latest - think on the 500 it is about 3.30 or so - Garmin express will do the update for you - free download from Garmin.

Edit - I seem to remember your issue being one of the bugs fixed by Garmin, but I don't know where I saw that anymore - having successfully destroyed my 500....

Yup, that was fixed in the versions after 2.5 or 2.7

I did not like the "improvements" of 3.3 and rolled back to 3.1

Happy days!

For the Stages I think you pretty much have to be current - same as for the Vector pedals - they keep fixing bugs... :)

Update: everything is working A-OK now, so the software upgrade was all that was needed.

And your battery life will be better.... a win win...

The new "technical" information about your device. Some bull about the techies being able to see your life story.

This slowed down the speed at which the device acquires the satellites.

With 3.1 I would switch the unit on and it would have satellite signal under 45 seconds.

With 3.3 I would switch the unit on, go get dresses, read thehub, read the internet (all of it), have coffee, start my ride and halfway too work ... it would acquire satellite signal.

Everything else still works (fast) when going back to 3.1, so if it aint broke, dont fix it.

dinkum!?  Big brother is everywhere!

Must say, I have been running 3.3 for a while now and the 500 is behaving better than ever - haven't noticed slow satellite acquisition (other than when I got off a plane in CTN that is...)

It seems to slow down the satellite pickup when you move start points between sessions - almost if it "remembers" where you were when you stopped the last time you used it, then gets confused for a while when you move it to a new start position.

Only people with 2 homes have this problem.  :P
