Contador on a mission. Never a dull moment with that one. Win or lose he always has a full go.

Today he won. I think it's a clever move. In pink after a big effort but now a few days rest in effect while the sprinters get a chance to play. Then it's up to the others to take the race to him.

But goes very much against what he and his team said their plan was - to NOT be in pink until the 3rd week, to keep the pressure of him and the team. Now they will have to defend the jersey.

I have a suspicion that the moment got the better of AC and he couldn't help himself. Don't be surprised if his DS is actually not as happy as you think.

For the Tinkoff domestiques, the Giro just got a whole lot harder and more stressful. And we haven't even got to the first rest day yet. Eish. If I was Mick Rodgers I doubt I'd be smiling right now.

I actually think it will be business as usual for Tinkoff. Up until now they've been controlling the race anyway and will just continue to do so. They don't have to chase every single break for the next 3 weeks.

I hear you and normally I would agree with you. What makes me doubt it a little is the very deliberate and apparently planned bike change for Contador just before the final climb. I would love to know how that second bike was set up. Different gearing perhaps? Lighter wheels? Just makes me think today's move was thought out before.

I reckon Tinkoff broadcast Plan A and then employ a different strategy.

Smoke and mirror,,trickery, mind game, ambush, surprise, shock kinda tactics.

El Pistolero is an old and wily campaigner.

What a thrilling Giro

Yip. . One thing is certain.. Beefy bert is a racer, he doesn't need his stem to tell him when to race and he will race to till the very end and when he sees a chance to attack he will. It is why I enjoy watching him ride.

To me it looked like Bert getting into his 4th gear. By no means full gas which is why they could close him down.

Just to shake up the GC I think. Less contenders to worry about. The last 3kms he just sat in and towards the end he must've thought: "Tsek, you're not riding away from me...."

You folks may be right; makes sense.

Either way, this is why the riders rate the Giro so highly, why the tifosi are more passionate and knowledgeable than TDF fans, and why the Giro is just always more exciting and more unpredictable than the TDF. The best grand tour IMO. Loving this first week already. Top racing, and lots of new faces in the peloton.

Gonna be a great couple of weeks of racing. I'll reiterate, the lack of support for Porte worries me.... lets hope they get their strategy, mindset sorted soon otherwise Berty and Aru will dominate.
