Wtf, am I blind or is there a sky rider standing right there watching this? Probably waiting to pace Porte back to the bunch but why not give him his wheel and take the penalty by taking Clare's wheel? Not a great " marginal gain"

I was wondering why a GC rider was on his own in the peleton in the first place.

But now that you pointed out the other Sky rider there, it begs the question: 'Why isn't he taking his own team mate's wheel?' (even if they are all ignorant of the rule).

This they enforce, but they look the other way when granting Astana a pro license. How about taking no nonsense when it comes to punishing teams that constantly in the news for doping. Ugh. Feel meh about the giro now a bit.

Ja, because it's very easy to go after the proverbial 'low hanging fruit'. They are hard on enforcing the minor (easy) rules, but shy away from dealing head on with the really big (difficult) stuff. That way, they can tell themselves they're doing well and enforcing the letter of the law.

Or cutting corners when certain riders need a TUE asap.

It's because they are selective when they enforce rules that riders ignore or bend rules. . It's like children who know they can get away with some things, then they can get away with other things.

Read my last line again. That's what I said.

I suffer from selective reading.. sorry didn't see that last line.

My thoughts while watching yesterday as Porte was struggling to get back in was that AC or Aru send there guys to the front and slow the pace down and wait for sky and Porte to get back in... it was clear by then that they weren't going to catch the break away.

I remember watching years ago when Lance did it when Jan Ulrich had an issue and Ulrich then in-turn did it when lance hooked a spectator and fell... There battle for GC is in the mountains and that's where you prove who is best... just my feeling on the issue.

4km from the end.. never going to happen.. yes 50km out, we've seen them do that plenty. . But not so close to the finish.

To add, by the time they heard that he had had a mechanical they must have been what less than 2km to the finish.. in a bunch. . How do you stop those sprint teams or even organise a go slow.. those last kms are hectic on those flat stages.

If certain teams exercise patriotic allegiance to another team, like Aussie-based OGE to Tasmanian Porte, then it's an unfair advantage

The okes from the Basque country are all in different teams but they will do anything to work together though.

And while all of them are snoozing, we tear our hair out about their selective enforcement policy LOL.

I feel that if they want to rule with an iron fist then punish every single little rule bend, twisting and breaking. That way everyone knows where they stand.

As for sportsmanship, this could have been turned into a PR heaven! Especially with the dark cloud of Astana demolishing the pelaton at the moment and everyone holding thumbs that the next big scandal won't explode by nightfall and ruin the sport even more.

I have so much respect for Clark right now (Even though it doesn't mean anything to him), i think this is an exceptional level of human decency portrayed. This is the type of behaviour as a parent i would love my children to show.  How is it any different to Amla walking from an edge if the umpire hasn't given him out?

Once again the people in power have let the sport down AGAIN!!!

Rant Over, Lets hope for some good racing ahead

Edit: Spelling and  grammar

Fair point...

Its a real pity as I don't see Richie making up 3 min in the time trial and the mountains. Aru and astana are too strong as is AC. Now we just hope he goes out swinging and brings some entertainment in the mountains

Right. . What is in store for them today?

Perfect day for the breakaway specialists.

Gilbert and Tommeke must surely have pegged this day for a stage win. Personally that would be my ideal result - watching them have a proper go.

A lumpy stage with no huge climbs, so perfect for the puncheurs, the last 60km packed with 3 repeats of the 200m high Tre Monti climb and finishing on Imola's world-famous motor circuit:

I think porte will want to, but will sky allow him to, or will they play it safe and try secure a podium instead.

My punt for the day: Sky to come out swinging.

If I'm right, that means a lot will be asked of Kiryienka, Siutsou and co. to put in huge pulls and make racing super hard for the others.

Looking at the weather report, it predicts a sunny 24 degrees with a 10 km/h SSW wind, so a bit of a crosswind for the mid-part of the race (see red arrows in pic below). Not really enough for a strong team to force echelon splits, but Sky will have to take any little bit of assistance where they can.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Quickstep, BMC and Sky collaborating to break up the field along that stretch.
