Why not use them as training wheels and just get a more race ready wheelset?

I understand what you guys are saying and agree to an extent... BUT I can not justify spending R10000 upwards on a set of wheels that I only use on occasions.

buy second hand, always a great deal to be had. If you are going to buy new the great thing about the mavic equips and elites is they come loaded with tubes/tyres so the only additional cost is the cassette. and agree with previous posters , keep yr current wheelset as a training set.

Wheels are pretty much the best single upgrade one can do on a bicycle, so mebbe save up a bit more and extend the budget so you only ever buy a race set once....instead of settling for something now and then the itch starts again in 6 months.

In that case I reckon new tyres are a better bet. If you drop R5,000 on new wheels you aren't some gonna get a massive shift in performance. Rather keep the cash in your pocket and splurge some of it on sheet hot racing tyres.

Unless you want the wheels cos they're bling and new - in which case ignore my advice freely :-)

Budget R5000 give or take...

- Also seen a set of Easton EC90 as well as Easton EA90

Out of interest, where did you find EC90's for R5,000?

In the classifieds yesterday morning when I first made this topic and then an hour later they were gone... no surprise there, someone got a good deal.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am no rush and I agree for R5000 I will not get a brand new set of wheels from a shop that are much better... but if I am patient and keep a watch on the classifieds I may pick up a very good deal for R5000 +- that could otherwise cost R10k in a shop?

Well that's my thinking anyway

Okay so I decided to wait it out a bit and am now looking for a good set of racing wheels, I have a few options that I am considering and have a deal pending on a set of darkhorse wheels which I really like, the only thing now is do I get tubbies or clincher?

I am very undecided on this, what are your thoughts?

Also what are good tubular tyres to consider?

Anyone using the Edge Design XLR200/XLR300 wheels?  Looks like good value and pretty light weight.

I'm on the XLR300's for about a month now and I'm very impressed.. Very light and rolls well.

Tubbies will be slightly lighter and generally give a smoother ride, the big disadvantage is good tyres are now +R1500 each (Conti GP4000) so if you get a puncture you say good by to the tyre and your bucks. They also need to be glued on to the rim by painting on glue or using a special adhesive tape, this if done buy the book can take 3 days before you can use them for painting option.

Clinchers are easier to live with and there was a recent study where clinchers where shown to have a lower rolling resistance and that the slight weight advantage of tubbies only over came this when gradents where over 8% (if I remember correctly).

Hey guys

Anybody got experience or know more about the American Classic Carbon 58 wheels?

Reviews seem pretty reasonable.

secondhand on the hub I got a pair of dura ace c24 for R5k and a set of Dura ace c50 for R7k, both very happy with.  look out for good secondhand

I was always a bit nervous about getting used hoops in the marketplace.

With a thorough viewing before purchasing, I found a sweet deal on some Ultimates.

Those are awesome deals you got there, hey, Tjokkits.
