Road Racing wheels - what to get without breaking the bank?

If you go for full carbon rims then opt for tubbies (Tubular's). These are less susceptible to damage if you flat since the tubbie will always protect the rim surface.

I'm mind view, hubs should either be Shimano, Campagnolo or Chris King. Everything else is problematic.

Novatec are good budget hubs. Steer clear of Easton wheelsets, great rims, really poor hubs

Those American classic 58 are a bit too deep for all round wheels. I would go for the aero 420 or the sprint 350. I personally have sprint 350 for training wheels, they are very light, the bearings are beautiful and roll forever

Hey guys

Thanks for all the replies... Just to clear up I am no longer looking for all round wheels. I will be keeping my current alu wheels for training and getting a new set of wheels for racing.

I have a few options but at this stage am leaning to a set of Concept 50mm clinchers from CCD... prefer buying brand new when it comes to carbon and he gives a 2 year warranty.

Any other thoughts or suggestions please fire away.

I'm looking at Darkhorse wheels, probably the 50mm tubbies. Very light and definitely won't break the bank. Also some good reviews, literally have seen only one guy complain (altyd daai een...). But they only come with a 1 year warranty, so Concept wins in that regard.

Good luck on your choice

I have a pair of American Classic 350's. Very happy with them and glad to hear someone else also find them great. Definitely felt like I improved my climbing when fitted and off the block get up to speed much faster than the old workhorses. So ... Consider.

I have a set of old Easton Tempest 2 tubbies .

They are now  called EC 90's .

This must be the BEST , most versatile  , rigid and FAST wheelset around , at a very reasonable price .

I only race on mine , and use them on the odd training ride .

What fantastic wheels .

Also had my eye on darkhorse wheels for a while and I see they just put up a clearance sale on the classifieds section at the same price as the Concepts... Now im really undecided

Haha, I also saw that. Flippen good deal hey. Although I see that it's the clinchers. But still, it's a pretty good deal on some sweet looking wheels.

Yea I am looking for clinchers though so for me its now between the darkhorse set or Concept set.. could be worse choices to have but I need to decide quickly

Since we on the topic of carbon wheels, just wondering if they have a life span? Reason im asking this is because i might buy a buddy of mines Zipps which are about 2 years old and he rides with them everyday... I dont want to buy something thats gonna break in a few months time

Looks like the DH wheels are the V shaped rim whereas Concept uses a wider rim shape. Don't know how important this is to you

You are quite right on that... I have never ridden in the wider rims but I have heard a lot of guys saying that it is the way to go
