Cyclist down in Durbanville

you know what..I would happily pay a R500 annual cycling license to the DOT if I knew that money was being actively used to promote and protect all cyclists AND runners on our roads

I'm also ok with paying... but sadly that wont make motorists respect us... what always gets to me is they think its "us" and "them" .. but they don't realize we are also motorists... and they need to be made aware like little children that we are allowed on the road as with trucks, busses, etc.

Since the government isn't doing it, is there any way we can enforce the road rules ourselves through a social campaign?

Lets get cheap russian dashboard cameras and mount them on our bikes and/or car dashboards and then upload footage of people breaking road rules. It could be someone talking on the phone or someone running a red light or whatever. Hell i drive only 10-15 minutes each day and in that short time i see something nearly every day.

It would be a joke at first, but a simple site that hosted the videos (or links to the videos) and then kept track of the ridiculous amounts of violations being uploaded would soon become serious. If it became a social campaign and there was a weekly video showing the worst drivers, and it went viral in SA, i'm pretty sure we could embarrass drivers into behaving pretty quickly.

Perhaps then the government would realise that apart from saving lives there is some revenue to be made enforcing these rules

Disgusted today.

Club ride through Gordon's Bay. Despite our group carefully riding in single file, some joke of a cop in an unmarked silver car called us out twice on his loud-hailer to ride single file. He did pull over some other driver, who knows what for, but he didn't go near any of the drivers who passed closer than 1m.

I know of other cyclists have been fined for 2-up riding down that stretch too.

That 1m law is a joke - the cops just now target cyclists they see riding 2-up as a result of it.

Soft targets , the cops would rather pull over an 18 year old female driving to varsity than a hardened taxi driver.

I might have mentioned this before but the other day I saw a woman getting a ticket in the hail while the pig sat in his car

Condolences to the family. I am also using the Klipheuwel road  for training. There is no warning signs that cyclist's may be on any of the outer Durbanville roads.

Have a look at the following - it may be a start  for PPA to approach municipalities/Sanral to erect signs along the frequently shared cycling/public roads:

Raise awareness by using something similar below on a T-shirt or cycle shirt:

Drivers don't obey signs dude....

Sadly true. If you look at the carnage in Joburg yesterday on the N12 you realise it's not just about us as cyclists. We're vulnerable as heck out there - but the real issue is bad drivers, bad vehicles, drunk drivers etc etc. It's killing all types of road users at a frightening rate

True then we react with aggression when someone tells us we drive like d**ses

This was just a suggestion, throwing a number out there.  All I was trying to get at is that most people on the roads think that cyclists don't belong on it because they don't pay for a license.

we also pay taxes, and own vehicles.

I NOTICE THAT MORE AND MORE PEOPLE FOCUS ON THEIR CELLPHONES WHILST DRIVING. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND WATCH THE OTHER DRIVERS IN PEAK HOUR TRAFFIC. THE GOVERMENT HAS CAMERAS IN PLACE THAT MONITOR TRAFFIC. POST THE IDIOTS THEIR WELL EARNED FINES. THEY UPED THE SPEED FINES, WHY NOT DO THE SAME FOR TALKING ON THE CELLPHONE. JUST A THOUGHT.

Here's another idea for a campaign - a cycling group 10 / 20 cyclists go out in their cars - drive in single file at the speed limit or at the legal lowest speed limit with banners that say - "I'd rather be riding my bike" or some such blurb to hit home what the roads would look like if we opted to drive and not ride...

OK it may pee ppl off more so maybe not the most logical ideas but I still maintain PPA is doing very little in terms of campaigning for cyclist where it matters most.

Sounds awesome, even have all our bikes on the bike racks. Hazzard lights the works. :whistling:  :w00t:

O and I am getting one of those silly rear view mirrors for my bike.

Silly? I don't think so.

Get one of these ~ Italian Road Bike Mirror. I've used one for a while, works great, fits neatly on the end of the bar. Barely noticeable

Is it cool? Probably not.

Do I care? Definitely not.

I was thinking of this this morning. Money talks - what is the cycling industry worth and how many people does it employ?

If government can be shown that cycling contributes to the economy and employes people maybe then stricter rules will be enforced. Also, its is not just an elitist sport as there must be thousand of commuters who ride to work simply because they can't afford public transport. That should also help get government involved.

I have no idea who you would pass these numbers on to though.
