Were did you get the mirror from?

Sportsworld have two models available (well, one is out of stock and has been for a while).

I would suggest to PPA that instead of medals/goodie bags at the next race the hand these out?  I'm sure if they order a thousand from China they would probably work out at about 10 bucks each.  It could save a life...

With all due respect guys what's a mirror going to help. Ride on the oncoming verge side!

Now before all you roadies start saying things like "Well I average 98.725km/hour and the guy coming in the opposite direction, blah blah"   shut the **** up!

the point is you'll see cars coming..

Thanks Alec for your insightfulness, however I will still ride on the correct side of the road.  Mainly due to that it is the rules of the road, and physics...

Terrible advice. It's illegal - penatly can be anything from a fine to a year in jail. Even if you don't get fined, breaking laws doesn't help our case. Certain areas now, cops are ticketing 2-abreast riding. Disgraceful since they don't ticket < 1m passing, but that doesn't change things.

I've also seen accidents caused or nearly caused with other cyclist riding the wrong way - we had a near miss this morning because we had to swerve out into traffic on the R44 to pass someone doing this. You may think it's protecting you, but actually it's endangering others.

Sorry I disagree, this has also been covered on other threads. You might solve one problem but you also create 20 new ones

This link even has stats to back up why you don't cycle against traffic:

This topic has been discussed here:

My own take on this is that the only improvement you could get riding on the wrong side is from the potential rear end accident. This ironically enough is the type of accident that happens least. Majority are from side junction road interactions. Riding on the wrong side of the road will HEAVILY increase this stat as drivers wont think to look for you coming along on the wrong side of the road and these take outs can only increase then!

Heavy penalty considering you're all complaining that the law does nothing when someone gets killed on a bike.

I totally agree - but that's the law sadly, at least as I understand it.

The whole 1.5m campaign got us a 1m law that is never enforced in our favour, and a 2-abreast and other laws which are enforced against us because it's an easy way to make some lunchtime Donut money out of quick fines. Did absolutely zero to improve cycling safety.

As others have said though, cycling on the wrong side isn't an answer either

How much more do you think drivers are going to hate road cyclists when they start getting fined for not being a meter away, **** I feel sorry for you okes....

At least the real cyclists..........

Please calm down. Your comments are emotional, immature and uncalled for.

Go have a cold one and come back when you can be constructive and mature about the situation.

Thanks - better than my response, but there is no delete button so my hot headed reaction will just have to remain

I do not think anybody drives into a cyclist on purpose, unfortunately they obviously drive away in fear of being prosecuted for.

Reason I mention this is, if the driver is on his cellphone/drunk/sun in his eyes/just not looking, a law will not make a difference, it is more about awareness and thinking there might be cyclists up ahead, especially on the open roads, like the Klipheuwel road.

Unfortunately not even bike lanes will help, cause large groups will still cycle in the road.

I do not even think it comes down to the cyclist not stopping at the red light anymore, just hink with alcohol and cellphones, to many distraction to be aware of a cyclist.
