Self defence on rides

Karate and Aikido both are a self defense Martial Art, yet both allow good attacks by simply defending.

The problem I have with all these courses and things people do, I am in favour of it, I must just add.

The issue however, going to one or two classes a week is not going to help in the heat of the moment, most people will hit a complete blank and forget what they learnt.

Muscle memory and second nature is the key, you can take most classes and ask people to show you two hours after the class what they learnt, step by step and they would have forgotten.

That is step by step, when the poo hits the fan the attacker will not be a willing partner.

I don't know very much about Aikido, but, I have done Karate, and defensive moves are always stepping back - whereas Ninjitsu, Krav Maga, and Systema, you physically step towards an attacker even in a defensive move.

I do agree with what you are saying about people forgetting, and I have never actually had to use my martial arts aggressively, but, situational awareness is also learnt, and for a lot of people the biggest issue is they blunder into a bad situation without seeing it until it is too late.

I hand the bike over and call my insurance for an upgrade. I'd love to know how to handle myself but alas I can't imagine I'd do too well against a group of screwdriver-wielding nyaope heads.

Sometimes you just gotta fight back and its better if you know how.  In my case 3 thugs attacked me, the one with the knife did not wait for me to hand over my possessions but immediately started to stab me, only been able to manage to remove his knife and my helmet saving my skull from been crushed am I able to type this.

Further, if you aren't regularly struck by your opponent during these classes, it is a big problem. If a guy gives you a proper punch to the head/face and it's not something that you've experienced before, most people are so shocked/disorientated. that all their training counts for ****.

That is what body conditioning is for.

If I do not leave the dojo without bruising and bleeding it probably wasn't a very good session.

That is awful, I hope I never encounter a situation like that. Sorry, Scotty.

I pray that I am never in a situation like that Scotty as I have no ability to fight and have no idea how I would or should react .... I mean I know that I would try to just give them what they want but as you say sometimes that is not enough, saddens me though

These scum bargain on one thing in their efforts.....surprise attack.......and putting you in a situation where panic wants to be achieved. Then you are like a lamb to the slaughter.

Trying to fight them will also not help, unless it is a one-on-one......maybe a one-on-two.....but then again you must have experience and have adequate and current training to do that. Watching it on TV, doing the moves in the bedroom, and wearing a "Tap Out" t-shirt won't cut it. This scum literally operate like wild dogs.....and wild dogs hunt bigger prey in packs.

Don't be complacent on your regular rides just because you are familiar with the route. Scummy will use this against you. When a situation or environment seems suspicious I try to do something unexpected.......surprise them before they surprise you. One of them is a little siren the size of a matchbox with a gazillion DB high pitch irritating sound that is attached to the bike. You just pull a pin out and the neighbourhood dogs are in pain. The other is a small and cheap tazer. Not to be used in self-defence as it might just tickle, but the crackling sound of the blue spark will instantly result in a surprise "WTF is this SHEET" facial expresion.

On a serious note, every situation will differ and no event or outcome will be the same. Learn, even by mental imagery, how to stay calm and effectively manage the situation. Adrenaline can be your friend or enemy. The best advice however is to try and avoid the situation......even if it means you coming last on your favourite STRAVA segment.

Definitely pick your fight but don't fight for your bike just for your life. While reading everyone posts I realized that as cyclists in SA there is a unique piece of kit missing. There are a number of weapons available and mentioned but no piece of kit one can use to easily store these devices without effecting training. Lets face it the back pockets of the shirt is not accessible and other methods interfere of make riding uncomfortable.

I recommend someone design a breathable Lycra or other stretchy material chest strap that can secure one to 3 self deference weapons that wont move while you ride but will come of easily when you grab at it. I like the post about an extendable rod and personally I keep pepper spray. Knives and guns are dodgy but flip hearing what these thugs do to you I am being scared into maybe considering it. Maybe rather take up basic self defense. Even one class a month could be useful.

Those with kids how do you motivate them riding a bike and would or do you allow them to hit the streets alone.

If you stepped back with Karate you should have found another sensei.

You need to move forward and back and sometimes to the side, it all depends what your opponent or attacker is up to.

Then you get attacking fighters and you get defensive fighters.

Defensive moves are a forward or backwards defense or even attack.

Interesting product!

The only problem i see with this is having to aim and shoot somebody in the face with it.

If you miss you screwed.

I have one of those, you don't even need to hot the face, the chest will be enough.

True......guys that like to use their legs for attack you move closer to as a defence and limit their space........while moving away for the quick hands okes. But if you can read a punch from a mile....move in as detence with vinige handjies as attack.

This is what I read in Streetfighting 101........most probably why I also got bliksemed alot.
