Rear derailleurs for 1x10 conversion

Hey fellow 'boscher! Just a hint: I did my conversion 3 weeks ago: 32T (RaceFace NW) x 11-36. I kept my "normal" / non-clutch XT long cage derailleur - wanting to save up for a clutch conversion. But so far, there have been no chain drops. I've done some mad rooty and rocky sections with no chain drops! [emoji106] ...only the very familiar and annoying chainslap!

My advice is to check the chain tension. On all the 1x10 conversion forums and threads this topic always pop up.

I run the same on one of my bikes and never had a chain drop.

My oppinion is also that chain may me to long.

Had a Zee for 1560km no chain drop. Running 36t 11-36 cassette. Busy testing a locally made "Kitted wondering" Nw in 34t and 32t great local product, great price R450 and after +300km no drop or shifting issues.

JC what shifter you got with the Zee?

Chain drop on 1x10 shouldn't happen easily if you have NW and correct chain length. I think I've dropped mine once in a year, and that was when the chain was too long. A clutch derailleur can help, but it's not essential.

My chain length is 2 links off being as short possible in the granny gear. Is that not the correct chain length?

Hard to say. Two whole links? (one inner and one oiter). I can't remember how many links mine was, but I run a 42 at the back with one of 3 (32, 34, 36) interchangeably on the front with the same chain length now with no issues. I set it up with the 36, and the others work 100%.

I didn't see if you said if your chain is new?

I've got a Zee shifter but i am Looking for a I-spec XT shifter cause I change between 1x10 and SS often and its a mission to take the ESI grip off to get the shifter on. I have it down to 8min but could probably go in under 3 with an I-spec shifter.

But any Shimano 10speed shifter will work fine.

2 links as one inner and one outer. My chain isn't new but it has plenty of life left. Does chain ware effect dropping a chain?

I have run the wide range Zee with xt shifters and a 40t wolftooth with no issues. Think it depends on how much chain growth you fet at full travel that will be the deciding factor on whether or not the zee will work

Interesting... By all accounts the mech itself only has capacity for a 36t ring at the back.

Any trouble shifting to the 40t?

No issues at all - had it on my mojo

It may cause the NW Chainring to hold on less well? I dunno. Mostly I just ride.... I was just saying that I dropped my chain, and then shortened it a bit and never again. Who knows.... May just be coincidence...

Would you recommend the zee over a slx and XT derailleurs? Is their a benefit to the zee?

Any of the 10 speed derailleurs from deore to XTR will work fine.

if you're planning on upgrading the sprocket to 40t / 42t, you may need a long cage.

Besides the sturdiness, not really. Except short cage is meant to give better shifting I've heard...

I would use any if the medium cage Shimano derailleurs from SLX up. Currently using XT (gs) and it is all good
