Water in seat tube

After riding in the rain, I always have to remove the seat post and empty the seat tube of about 150ml of water.

-Is this normal when riding in the rain?

-Can it do damage to the frame regardless of the frame material?

It's normal. Drill a hole in the bottom of your BB shell to let the water run out. Seriously. With some BB types, the water will ruin the bearings.

Easier said than done. Rather let a professional drill a hole if its a 20k + frame

I have a hybrid frame with Aluminium/Carbon rear stays, and after washing the bike there is always water in the frame. I turn the bike with the front wheel facing the air, and let the water drain out of the small holes on the back of the rear stay drop outs. Never had any issues.

I have the same issue. Simply remove the seatpost and have the water drain out. Keep the bike upside down for a bit, to make sure there's no moisture left.

Just follow that routine and your frame should be good, irrespective of material.

Slide a section of rubber tube over the Joint between post and tube which will prevent ingress of water

I wouldn't say that having water in the frame after a wash is 'normal'.  I would be worried about my BB bearings running in water either after a wash or during a rain ride.  Find out where the water gets in and sort it.

I have the same problem on my merida 96. Luckily the seat tube does not go through to the BB on my frame so I just drain the water every now and again. That said, I would not want water in my BB.

Agree, simple solution. Just be sure to remove the BB before drilling otherwise there's a chance you'll go right through the BB tube as well.

This will help, but water will still get in. If you don't want to drill holes in your frame, take the seatpost out and stand it upside down after you've washed it.

This is the best way of doing it, just check with the distributor if the frame's still under warranty. It won't cause structural damage unless you do a complete hack job, but some manufacturers are a bit sticky about it.

The OP said it was after riding in the rain, not after a wash. No frame is watertight - the rain will get in somewhere. When you wash, you can control where the water goes. Not with rain.

Have a look at any old steel frame - they all have large holes under the BB shell to let the water out. Some decent modern frames still do, like my Niner carbon MTB and my Bianchi carbon road bike. I had a Titus Alu MTB once that ate BBs for breakfast until I drilled the BB shell.

The Specialized MTB's have a rather large hole on the back of the seat tube as a minimum seatpost insertion indicator. If your seatpost seals the hole, as should be the case, water ingress should be minimal. Nevertheless, check your frame for an inspection hole like this and cover it with clear frame guard tape. Water is either going in there during washing and/or riding in wet conditions.

My penny's worth.

Good luck

It does not always help to drill a hole in the bottom of the bb as in quite a few frames the bb is sealed off from the seatube... Just empty the water out after the ride?

I've never had water in the frames of my road bike or MTB.
