Mielie meel Pap

Do you guys know if there is any differnce in nutrional value of oats when cooked on stove or when it is cooked in microwave?

Shouldn't be. I do my oats in the micro in the bowl I am going to eat out of. Half a cup oats, 1 cup water and a pinch of salt to taste. Add more water if you prefer it a bit runnier. 4 minutes on about 350W stirring every minute.

Fewer dishes to wash (watch your fingers on the hot bowl though ;)  )

That's true - do you recommend the oats in the sachets?

Dischem has non GM rolled oats in a big blue 5kg plastic packet.... cheaper than the packets and tiger oats...

1 part oats, 1 part milk, 2 parts water, salt to taste  - bring to the boil, and then let simmer for about 30min - 1 hour with a lid on.

Add sugar in the plate if that suits you....

Ja, true...apparently heat breaks down/destroys calories...so the micro stuff should actually fare better than stove top cooking, but hey, me no scientist...just adding to the discussion

Nope there isn't. But if you let it cool down before eating then it lowers the GI. Same thing with mielie meal. Also, I cook my oats with milk and water. Use about 3/4 cup milk in the cooking and then last little bit after to cool it down. The milk also makes the oats a bit stickier and less watery which I prefer.

I measure out my oats and milk but guess the water amount as I'm quite good at it now. If I don't have any protein at brekkie I get hungry quickly. Otherwise a spoon of PB as a treat is also delicious in oats and has protein.

It is actually the other way round. Something to do with the starch molecules that changes once cold. See this list by the GI foundation: http://www.gifoundation.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=97&Itemid=100103

Having some fat like butter, cream or boerewors with the pap will also lower the GI of your breakfast.

AFAIK all oats in SA are still GM free.

I thought about it but mielie meel pap is high gi. Secondly It doesn not have the nutritional value that oats and meusli have.

The stuff you buy in the supermarkets is almost devoid of any nutrition. By law some vitamins and minerals are mixed in. If you can get your hands on some real sifted maize meal from a small mill, now that is a totally different product. It will still have some of the germ and fiber which gives it a better taste, and lowers the GI as well.

I recently stopped at Dassiesfontein on the N2 for breakfast - has some very nice "mielie meel pap" - used to have it when I grew up. Anyone eating mielie meel pap instead of oats before a race or training?

You can even have your pap on the bike! I sometimes make "slappap",  watery mielie pap, with a pinch of salt and a teaspoon or two sugar. If you are tired of energy drinks and gels it goes down very well on the bike. Instant energy! Just don't forget the leftovers in the bottle! It turns sour very quickly.

I but a bag of yellow ground maize almost every time we drive past a farm stall just past Hilton in KZN called Rotunda. Unsifted. Epic stuff!

Great! Then you know what I am talking about. I run my own mill on the farm, unfortunately only white maize because there is a very limited market for yellow maize meal.

Maybe the oats grown here, but not everything is grown here.... and I have no faith in Monsanto at all.

But its not a huge issue for me at all. I prefer the taste of the dischem version over tiger oats.
