Buffalo

Not sure how a riding buddy will save you from a raging buffalo (other than being slower than you)  :whistling:

But ok, not too fussed, I prefer to have some company on these long rides.

Let the training begin!!!

Im looking for a 16week program which should allow us to peak at the Baviaans. We're currently averaging 45km Tuesday-Thursday with the odd Friday included. Tuesday hills, wednesday "recovery"(NEVER FEELS THAT WAY), Thursday Tempo. weekends is very much work dependent but we can do 1 long ride( 4hrs) either Saturday or Sunday.

Looking at between 9 and 13 hrs per week

O yes, target is a sub 11   :whistling:   :whistling:

The way you guys train these days you will get top 20   I will be back after Comrades #paincave hills hills hills and hills...

What's that saying - you don't have to be faster than the buffalo, you just have to be faster than your buddy.

I think it's more for the "crashed going down BergPlaas and I need someone to comfort me" kind of situation. Effectively, Ecobound have outsourced the medics to our team mates, which means that should I ever have a crash, or encounter a buffalo, there will be someone to hold my hand as the life drains from my body, or possibly live tweet the whole thing.

And when you get lost, you get lost with a buddy, which might prove to be a valuable source of food later on.

As you said - it's really about having a mate's shoulder to cry on when your walking up BergPlaas, or having someone to hold your hair while you vomit... (I've used my team mates for that!)

For the TB newbies like me - what is "the real danger around" that's not at the TK?

The biggest danger is that you will enjoy it more and not do the Trans Karoo again ;-)

Never mind the danger, imagine trying to get 1200 support crews in at Kondomo and then again at Suurbron. I remember our support crew having to park beyond Suurbron and run to the tag station to ensure that they make the 30 minute lead into Jeffreys ahead of us as the Suurbron support zone looked like a WW1 supply station in the middle of the trenches. Total chaos. I recall teams getting hit with penalties left, right and centre due to their support teams taking too long to get to Jeffreys. On the one hand there is pressure to grow the event, on the other hand riders get more demanding with how they are supported. I would only support solo riding once GPS tracking advances to the extent that solo riders can be reliably tracked without GSM tech and if solo entrants are willing to ride totally unsupported to free up space for the team support crews.

Last year the stop wasn't at Kondomo, was at a packaging store at it worked quite nicely.  Couldn't see that much problems or complaining from our support at the last stop and although we gave it horns toward the end, our support was at the end to greet us, and we did the last leg in under a hour.

Add a bit of water to turn it all into a mud bath, also consider that the further down the field you are, the longer support crews are at the stops.

Another danger was drunks walking or rather staggering in the road. We almost hit two, one at the packing house and one as we got out of the nature reserve. This could be because we where slower riders than they are drinkers so they got hammered first.

I think you got the numbers wrong here. The Baviaans is limited to 450 teams and that would make 450 support crews, that's still a lot, but 1200....wag nou so bietjie
