I have heard that Pink Stuff also work.

TBH this thread should have been locked after jc's post......

Oom and me don't see eye to eye on this. ALL cleaners will do the same...degrease. I dont care if the label says its bearing safe or if its pink / green

We are looking for a good de-greaser, only for the chain and hub, and Prepsol was recommended.

Not looking for a bike cleaner.

Advise and guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

parrafin

edit let me elaborate

ice cream container...1/3 full - chain in lid on - let lie for a few hours

take a drill and put a buff on the end and buff the bottom of the ice cream container so it vibrates it

leave for a few hours

dispose of parrafin and you have a shiny new chain

for anything else - just wash with prrafin and let it lie for a bit

Meneer I wash the whole bike with Powasol and it hasn't changed colour and bearings are fine.

If the chain needs degreasing after using "that" other stuff that some okes call lube I use undiluted Powasol and soak it.

Ja-nee true that. I say Powasol because I don't have to worry about getting on my paint etc. I dilute it 1:3 in a spray bottle and go to town om my bike. Top to bottom. I don't spray into my cassette by the lock nut for obvious reasons....

5 minutes later the chain and cassette get a second coat and a going over with a 25mm paintbrush that I cut half the bristles off with a pair of scissors.

Hosepipe, compressor and a rag to finish. Lube, park and ready to ride.

Works on my cycling shoes, gloves, my diesel engine even shirt collars

I still have pink stains on my garage wall after a little over exuberance with a bottle of Prepsol and my MX bike.....

Howzit,

Where in Cape Town, Southern Suburbs, can I find Prepsol?

Neither Midas nor Builders Warehouse has it.

Thanks.

Midas in Tokai had some a few days ago, give them a shout.

Any solvent based degreaser from any automotive shop will work for chain and cassette as long as you remove them first.

These types are solvent based but are water soluble.

Apply, agitate, reapply if necessary and rinse.

Just make sure that your chain is properly dry before applying the lube.

Thanks everyone.

Powasol v Prepsol v Dirt Nurse...

We just want a degreaser for the chain and hub.

If we can avoid taking parts off the bike that would be first prize :-)

@grebel

AG Halls in Peembee have a fantastic product called T4 that is a biodegradable (pinch of salt stuff) that they sell in a 5 litre container with spray bottle for next to nothing - well under 100 bucks anyway...works damn well on dirt and grease equally

with a small brush it gets all the grease off my chain - and then I adopt the prrafin method above every so often to get rid of the ingrained grease

next time you are here get a container full and give it a bash. Minaars also sell it...but at a markup  :whistling:

oom...sure, not arguing the lifespan you get, just saying my BB is over 3 years old...more than 10000km and headset the same. Wheelbearings even more. I like to think its because of my method.

Any of the three you mention will work...also clean green.

why do you want to avoid it...it takes 5 seconds with the right tools.

Oh and you dont want to degrease your hub, I suspect you meant cassette.

Apologies, I do mean my cassette.

I am not very technically inclined, so wont be removing anything on my own.

Thanks

Wynns 59sec mag cleaner from Midas R50 750ml in a nice trigger spray bottle. It's an emulsifier works like magic spray on, leave for 5mins, agitate if the dirt/oil is quite solid then rinse off with water. Amazing.

I see..

I would urge you to learn how to fit and remove chain with a quicklink since it will help you snap a chain whilst riding...Also removing the cassette is very quick...10 seconds max. you will need a lockring remover and chainwhip. Cheap tools.
