Hi Guys, is this an event that i can tell my wife to bring the kids along and wait while i compete, ie is there something for them to do?

There Is a big play park but it won't keep kids entertained forever. It is a family kid of day though so why not.

Just entered, this will officially be my first Try at a TRI (Lame I know but hey, its Friday)

Will Germiston Lake be warm enough to swim without a wetsuit as i don't own one?

If you want to get a feel, Trinity sports have a tri this weekend and Germiston, maybe do the sprint or watch. Set up should be similar to the 5150 and you can see what facilities are around.  If you decide to enter, will give you and idea of what to expect and also a practice run of the transitions.  Sprint should take you 1:30hr or less http://trinitysports.co.za/#Events

Also entered for this one. Heard good thing about it, seems like a good start for people like us who are new to triathlons.

Always go for a sprint distance if you are new to tri, its generally harder than you expect it will be when you add the 3 events together.

The plus with a sprint is that you can always get through it, it will never be too tough to finish.

Sprint is a good starting point, the swim is not too daunting (long), the cycle is quite nice (is a double lap with road closure) and the run is fairly flat (also a double lap).

You will also see a lot of new to tri do the sprint, all ages, shapes and sizes... so is less intimidating.

Plus you get to learn quickly the do's and don'ts during transition and how your body reacts throwing all 3 disciplines together!!

Most of all go and enjoy yourself... your time is immaterial to the experience you will gain !!

Thank you. Always do my best to enjoy any event that I take part in...else there really isn't much point.  :)

^ this more than anything, its easy in separate parts, together not as much.

Need to learn to pace things rather than just cracking.

Possibly I am confused here but just so that I understand, the 5150 is NOT a sprint distance triathlon, its an Olympic distance. Sprint Tri's are half the Olympic distances more or less.

If you sort of swim, and sort of ride a bicycle and sort of shuffle a run an Olympic distance is possible. The first Olympic distance I did with 2 months training after leading a sedentary life for 30 years. So take it easy, enjoy the experience and you should be ok if you have done a bit of training. The cycle route is very pleasant and fast and smooth except for the last km where u go up that darn hill near germiston but apart from that its a pleasant course. Enjoy the experience.

got my number yesterday too..8 hundred something ...seems we have some ballies and youngsters from the hub doing it.

an remember sunscreen .... if u only remember one thing on the day, make it sunscreen even if its overcast in the morning, apply suncscreen

Not confused at all, there was just some discussion on perhaps doing a sprint distance before trying olympic 5150 and that trinity sports have a sprint (and olympic) at Germiston this Sunday.

Also noticed a lot of hubbers with low race numbers, seems to be a growing sport with the youngsters... good to see!!

I haven't been called a youngster in many a moon, so thank you kindly Dear Sir's

Maybe you "Ballies" (Luckily not my word so i can't be held accountable as a snot nose "Youngster" of today  ) can help us novices here please. I see its a no drafting event, and that if in the draft the cyclist has to complete the overtaking move in a certain time frame.

What happens if you enter the draft zone of the rider in front with the intention of passing but then either you start going down hill or you run out of steam or you are maintaining your pace but the guy in front has found some extra vooma and now you can pass him anymore? do you pull to the side or do you have to back off out of the Draft zone and stay there till the end of the race?
