Cyclists Attitude towards motorists CPT

Do you as a cyclist pay a yearly vehicle licence fee to ride your bicycle on the road? No you don't. You use the road for free. Motorcycles are allowed to lane split....however they do so at their own risk.

Forgive my tone...not trying to fight with anyone. I'm always suprised when cyclists have that attitude of entitlement on the road. In a time where too many cyclist are being knocked, this is last thing we should be doing. Share the road, respect your fellow road user, irrespective what he is riding\driving.

I as a cyclist pay for 4 vehicles and 1 motor cycle license every year - but still choose to commute to work by bike every day - so dont come with this arguement

Fabian46, that is something the goverment decided. So why even mention it?

No pedestrain, runner or cyclist need to pay to use the road and according to the goverment they are ALL entitled to the use of the road.

No riding abreast unless overtaking another cyclist as far as I can remember.

Also I think the law says cyclists should ride inside the yellow shoulder where there is sufficient space and it is safe to do so... anybody can confirm this?

The law actually states that the cyclist must be as far to the left as safely possible. And it also says that NO ROAD user should be in the yellow lane.

We are entitled to use the "Shoulder" of the road, not the whole lane. Hence my comment.

Look at it this way, if your actions on the road inconvenience the next road user, you're doing it wrong. Whether car, bicycle, motorcycle, or as a pedestrian.

It's not ALL cyclists that have this entitlement, and it's not restricted to lycrans either. I'd love to say it's the minority as well, but anyone who's been on Chappies on a Sunday morning will know that it's a bun fight, filled with pro-peloton wannabe's.

I think we should show one another respect, respect the law, and above all, respect that we're not invincible. If we did that, the roads would be safer for all. And there you have it, world peace. You're welcome!

As posted on the Arrive Alive website.

But I know the RTA goes into a lot more detail, and actually treats cyclists as road users where other traffic / road users may only overtake where safe to do so.

That says to me that where necessary, we are allowed to cycle in the roadway. It may not be the safest thing to do, but the Act does not prohibit us from doing it.

Riding on pedal cycles

1) No person shall ride a pedal cycle on a public road unless he or she is seated astride on the saddle of such pedal cycle.

2) Persons riding pedal cycles on a public road shall ride in single file except in the course of overtaking another pedal cycle, and two or more persons riding pedal cycles shall not overtake another vehicle at the same time.

3) No person riding or seated on a pedal cycle on a public road shall take hold of any other vehicle in motion.

4) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall deliberately cause such pedal cycle to swerve from side to side.

5) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall carry thereon any person, animal or object which obstructs his or her view or which prevents him or her from exercising complete control over the movements of such pedal cycle.

6) A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall do so with at least one hand on the handle-bars of such pedal cycle.

7) Whenever a portion of a public road has been set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, no person shall ride a pedal cycle on any other portion of such road.

8) A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road or a portion of a public road set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, shall do so in such manner that all the wheels of such pedal cycle are in contact with the surface of the road at all times.

Seriously? I dont follow the reasoning here? The more vehicle licences you pay, the closer you may ride the the centre of the road? Cant believe I had it wrong for so long, I should be riding on the white line in the middle.....

Hi Trevor...Exactly as you said mate. I'm a cyclist myself. All I was trying to do is to make these guys aware that what they are doing wasn't doing it safely.

But it's all down to attitude. We are a bunch of cyclists and no motorist will come and dilly dally here. No respect to other ROAD USERS (wether driving or cycling).

I think you are missing the point the OP is trying to make. It's not a case of whether you are within the law as a cyclist. Your first priority when cycling on the road should be self-preservation. The law isn't going to do much when your brains are oozing all over the road after being knock over by some 4-wheeled idiot coming home at 6 a.m. after a night of boozing.

On a personell lever I believe laws are for the guidance of wise men and for fools to follow. Other public road users are not law enforcement officers!!!!

Having been road cycling for 30 years and having several accidents but predominately bike on bike (racing) and a very few involving motorist, I do believe common sense is what has ket me alive.

But in saying that it also means I will ride "considerately or inconsiderately enough" to maintain my health. Thus I ride inside a yellow should when the road permits it and on the other side of the coin when the road is too narrow I choose to ride in the middle of the road from Fishoek towards Muizemberg - on the main road their are area of this road which are just too narrow for cars and bike!

Question. If cyclist doing speed limit and not impeding motorist, why do motorists act like chops and try pass cyclists?

Chappies for instance 40km/h speed limit bike doing 50km/h knob motorist wants to try squeeze past, must be doing 70km/h plus. Almost double speed limit. Just wait and do the speed limit. 100% of time you will get stopped at road block and have all the cyclists in front of you again.
