Suspicious sellers of Garmin devices on OLX??

I've noticed a lot of "too good to be true" (in my opinion) sales of Garmin Edge 810 and Edge 1000 GPS's on the above website.

Guys are advertising them new (still in the box) at prices starting from approx. R4500.00.

You contact them and ask if they still available. Answer: Yes, still available.

Then I ask, why so cheap, is the box still sealed, are you a dealer for Garmin and where can we come check the unit before buying it.....then you get no reply

Anyone had similar experiences or bought these units off OLX/Gumtree?

As in no back up/warranty?

Ill be honest garmin are pretty good with back up/warranty. I bought a garmin edge 200 from the states(not online, went into shop and bought it) when they first launched the edge years ago. It was just good timing for me as it had just been launched there and hadn't been launched here yet. I asked them how does warranty work and they said its world wide. Then 2 years ago it died on me. I went to garmin in honeydew and told them I didn't buy it here in RSA so is it still under warranty. The guy said of course it is(I didn't even have my proof of purchase!). They offered me 2 options: pay in very little and get a new model or fix for(that's where I stopped him and said ill take the new one). I think I paid about R500 and got a new edge 500. That's how they keep you as a customer for life!

Now that really is awesome service. Well done Garmin  . Been trying to decide between a Sigma Rox and Garmin 510. Guess it'll be the Garmin even if it is more expensive

Garmin has the best customer service IMO.

My HRM stopped working, they replaced it on the spot no questions asked.

I've since bought the fenix2

Won't buy anything else but Garmin

Thanks for the info and your opinions guys, appreciate it.

The reason I'm looking for a new Garmin device is because my Edge 500 I've had for years now is starting to pack up on me despite master resets of device etc. I will definitely get a new Garmin because I agree, their service is fantastic!

I read somewhere that the Edge 500 will no longer have firmware updates available due to its age and maybe being discontinued?? Don't know if this is a load of "BS" or is it time to move on from the Edge 500 series?

Take your 500 to garmin in honeydew(think its laser park) and they will exchange it for a very small fee. really is worth it. If you go buy a new one you end up with 2(1 being an old one that doesn't work) and even if the old one still worked you probably wouldn't end up using it. DO IT JUST DO IT :w00t:

 ....will give it a try. Gonna pop in there later. For you info, they have now moved to Strijdom Park in Randburg. That's the new walk in service centre.

Things I have learned from this experience:

1. Paul in Joburg can morph into Phil in George in a nanosecond; and

2. When shopping for your own birthday present, stay away from OLX!
