Why does my road bike chain keep falling off

Hi Guys

Help would be much appreciated.

Whenever I down shift from the big ring to the small ring it tends to fall off.

It happens on the flats and will definitely happen when climbing.

It's rather annoying as I have to down shift when I'm going downhill in order for the chain to not slip off.

Any ideas how to stop this from happening?

I've seen a gadget call a 'chain catcher', will this help?

Ps. I've taken my bike to my lbs multiple times and they always say the gears need adjusting, which they say they've always done but it seems like it's just getting worse.

My groupset is Ultegra 9 Speed. Standard 54/39 chain rings

Also check that the FD is as low as you can get it without it touching the chainrings and that the outer edge of the FD cage is parallel with the chainrings.  Setting the front derailleur, especially with a triple, is not as easy as the rear.  Give us a shout if you don't come right.

Sounds complex....

Do you guys know of a store with a brilliant mechanic in the Sandton area?

It's a road bike. Throw it away and get a MTB. No need to thank me.

I have a road and mountain bike,

I love MTB'ing, been a MTB'er for 6 yrs or so and doing road for a year..

However the vibe @ road events is quite something

There are some great online videos.

When you see the video you will have a better understanding of the above mentioned.

What Venom1 said works, had the same trouble with my road bike. Watched a few vids on youtube and got it spot on. No cycle shop needed.

Definitely not. You can do it with your multitool, and it'll probably take all of 3 minutes. OK, 10 at a push. Getting to and from a bike shop: 1 - 2 hours, plus costs.
