Personal preference. There is no right/wrong answer to your question.

If you currently have Shimano pedals and you're concerned with weight, why not get the XTR versions? Won't get much lighter than that.

I have had Shimano SPD's forever!

You're looking in the wrong spot to remove weight.

This advice should be your starting point. I also went the weight weenie route ito pedals, and trust me there are flipping lightweight spd style pedals out there. Ritchey WC paradigm is what I went for, at 228grms for the set!!..and R2k later, I hit a rock on the inside of the spindle, and the rest is history. I then bought the rock solid XT's on special for R750 and never had issues since

As everyone said, it is a personal choice and definitely not the place to save weight. If you are looking around, the usual suspects are shimano, eggbeaters and look.

Shimano PD-540's....

If you want xmas tree pedals go for it but know that it comes at a cost...and by cost not just the initial outlay

Thanks for the idea, the egg beaters that have been lying deep within the dungeons of my spares container can go on the tree this year.

PD-M540 for the wife, and I regularly switch between PD-M530 and Saint flats on my bike.

I've been riding eggbeaters for years and recently Candys. I like that the cleats are lower profile so you can walk on rocks and stuff more safely when portaging etc. I also like how they are much better in mud. The bearings do wear though and you have to use a rebuild kit every now and then.

However I stripped and rebuilt a friend's Shimano 520s recently. This base level pedal has rock solid build quality and after 3 years of hard riding and abuse a clean out, fresh grease and bearing adjustment had them spinning smoothly again with no free play and no spares required. Impressed!
