None of the front guys have slept yet? John Ntuli can probably go for days without sleep due to Martin Dreyer's mentor ship

Martin can only do so much, he's into unchartered territory now but kicking ass

Jy is nogal ń lekker ou......thanks for all the updates.....

IMHO as a Bar-One collector by bicycle every Sunday.......this Chris is riding a clever race....he will have a very good idea by now how strong the others around him are......he rides and gets a good gap on those whom he considers to be contenders.......he will also have a very good idea what pace they are moving at as well.....get a big enough buffer.....catch a lie down and set the alarm just within the time buffer he has built up....start again relatively" freshish" and be competitive......but all hell can break loose when the body breaks down.....

I disagree, there's no way for these guys to know who is where. Pretty sure you can't have wife glued to the tracker sending you sms updates (doubt there's great cell reception either!)

Plus it's really tight at the front, you can't cover anyone, till much later. Essentially do your own race and ignore the other dudes

Sounded like Martin helped John with a strategy. Martin's Freedom record he slept 1-2 hours every 24 hours, expect to see something similar from John. Clearly a very talented cyclist, irrespective of endurance capabilities.

Agree. They are not newbies, most of these riders have won or placed high with similar endurance races in recent times. They will all understand their abilities and shortcomings very well and will be riding to a pre-determined strategy regardless of what others do. Maybe the last 100km they will race whoever is close but unlikely before then. My 2c.

Most 3+ day adventure races have most teams racing through the first night. It was not surprising to see very few stopping as the start was only at noon.

The wheels normally come off from the second night.

This is where the Sleepmonsters lurk.

I see Hannele Steyn, Rafeeq and Patric went walk-about  not the best time for sightseeing. Hope they rectify their error soon otherwise it's going to be an even longer night

:o they still going down the R403!!!

I know this is a "new " concept, but I know very little about most of the top 10 racers. Please share about some of the contenders.

I'll start with Tim Deane. He's an out and out adventure racer, and normally competes just behind the really serious elite teams. He's done a lot of 60hour plus races, I would guess most out of the field.

He hasn't really changed much for this race. Still riding his trusty merida 26 dual sus. No special bags or panniers, just his usual AR backpack. He borrowed a GPS from AR guys in bloem so probably hasn't ridden much with that! (he's good with maps, but that doesn't help here!).

When I originally looked at the munga, I thought an adventure racer would be best suited to it. He's the only one there, so that's why i'm backing him.

Ps. He's also a flippen nice guy.
