So, my workplace just decided to block the munga tracker. At 2 on a Friday, and just after Usher decided to hit the road... Really?!?! It's almost as if they're expecting me to do some work...

Random thought this, do you think any of the riders did the route before the race on a motorbike or something along those lines?

Would be a big help getting to know where the most difficult bits are and to scout the turnoffs etc.

nope - they didn't have the route!

Alex did it about 10 days ago, think it only really got finalised for real then.

some spots could be on google streetview. very few!

That makes perfect sense, I didnt take the route info into account as to whether they knew it or not.

I don't think mtb skills count for much here. Descending ouberg like a total wuss will cost you 5-10min max. that's nothing in the grand scheme of things.

All I can see is the gradient. But yes when zooming into the route in satellite it looks like a dirt road. But still there's a dirt road at hakahana that requires you keep your wits about you and it forms a significant portion of the enduro stage. So not all dirt roads are created equal.

this race is the same, just backwards.

Ok so Eselfontein race village is at just over 1000km. Usher should get there at around 3 to 5 am if he pushes through the night. He'll come down the escarpment during daylight where the others most likely will hit it during sunset / night time. He's probably conserving as much energy as he can as it will still be moer-hot, but with a +-20km downhill he'll have time to recover slightly before the 2 rather large and menacing fangs come up.

JN on the move again, getting interesting again.

I'm impressed with JN. He has a Net gain of +- 20km on GU from the stops. I wonder how much of it is feeling fresh enough to go on (i.e. planned departure time) and how much of it is knowing GU has left and he's losing time, so since he's not going to get any more sleep in, he might as well push on.

Those fangs look pretty hectic, hopefully the rest on the downhills will help with them.

so both GU and JN should be down the pass before dark....huge advantage...and probably the one thing that will differentiate them from the rest.....my guess is its a 2 horse race now

although....what time does the sunset there?

Yeah super impressed with his ride so far, Im just wondering where he is going to crack, because if he carries on with the rest he has had then he will crack.

I wonder how different it would have been in TD was still in some sort of contention without having crashed?
