BIERSTEKER Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Hi Fellow Enthusiasts, I am considering upgrading my eyewear form Oakley Fast Jackets to Oakley Radar lock XL's. Do any of you have some thoughts to share re Radar locks positive and or negative? Ill be using it while riding trails in the Western Cape area, based in Durbanville, so ride the trails at Meerendal and surrounds quite often. Reason for considering switching is for "more" eye protection, looks like more real estate around the eyes compared to the Fast Jackets, in an event of overhead branches etc as well as general dust and sand. Thanks for commenting. WB
Butterbean Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 If you want protection, jawbones/racing jackets core the eyes far better than radarlocks. They do fog a little when you're stopped but when's big there aren't any issues, and I swear easily and a lot, so I'm a good test subject. Try fit nicely and you do forget you're wearing them. Consider it. The radarlocks are brilliant for riding but definitely don't have the same amount of protection on offer from the jawbones. The radarlocks are brilliant at fitting and the clever design of the nosepiece is great at channelling sweat away from the lenses. They do feel far more fragile though, but are well made. Switching lenses is sublimely easy with the jawbones, and a little more finniky with the radarlocks. But go for it. Great pairs all round!
Cat2forLife Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Sounds like a good idea. Radarlocks are very nice shades. Try get one with a VR28 Black Iridium lens. Designed secifically for MTB.
Willie2011 Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Had the Radar path's and the Fast jackets.Prefer the radar's,definately more real estate and the "vents" keeps them from fogging up.Lost my path's at a fishing trip a month ago but getting a new pair December.I get good deals on Oakley from my uncle in the states. He's flying down to SA beginning dec.If you are interested I can get you a price on the XL's.Any Oakley stuff on the website for that matter.
BIERSTEKER Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Thanks guys, Don't need prescriptions.....yet.... I am worried about fog while stopped or especially while riding in wet conditions, also look like a water fountain while riding... I saw a pair of RL XL's today with two lenses which one of was the VR28's... Bit steep at R2600 but ill probably sell my FJ's.
BIERSTEKER Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Thanks Willie, I may take you up on that offer. Looks like my idea and research leans in the right direction. I am just worried about looking like a horsefly while wearing it....lol! Edit: Spelling

You will not make a mistake getting any pair of Oakleys, but the Jawbones offer far more protection - as has been said above. Don't worry too much about fogging up. I did the Transvaal galvanizers race on Sunday (lots of rain and mud) and did not have to take them off...
jcza Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 I've got the Radarlocks XL. They're great but I won't get XL again but rather the normal ones. Feels like they're too big (or maybe my head isn't big enough) and they do fog up especially when you're bleeding up a steep climb.
dirtypot Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 I've got the regular size Radarlock Path's - they're great! Had a stone flung up by a tyre of a bike in front down a fast decent in the mountain over the weekend - hit me square in the left eye (lens). Not only did the glasses stop me losing an eyeball, but they also didn't get a hint of a scratch! Fantastic glasses! Just wish that I hadn't gotten two dark lenses... A yellow or clear would have been a better bet. Also, I don't think that swapping lenses is difficult in any way. Once you've got the idea of how it works it only takes a few seconds.
venom1 Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 If you are still interested in Radarlock or Oakleys, CWC is having a sale on Oakley sunnies today. Keep a close eye on it. I see you from Cape Town. Pity cause you missed out on the Sunglass Hut sale a few months ago. They were selling Radarlocks for R1000.
BIERSTEKER Posted November 26, 2014 Author Posted November 26, 2014 Thank you all for your input. I have made up my mind, Radarlocks it is... Now to choose the color... Safe riding!!
SeaBee Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 I have an old set of "normal" Radar with a lightish (G30) lens - I use that for MTB. But for road I still prefer my Fast Jackets - if it had a lighter lens I would have very likely preferred it for mtb as well. It just fits my face nicely, so despite not being the popular choice awards winner, it works brilliantly for me. ANY sunglasses will fog if you putter up a long climb in winter. Maybe I just go too slow!
