They were from Bike24. I created a wish list and my family selected bits and pieces for my birthday.....

Yeah right!

How many birthdays do you have then?  Normal people have one per year but this is going to the extreme.  You must be  a f....g old goat by now?

I am an old goat, but my birthday was in the first week of Oct.

I make an online  wish list of thing I can't get in SA and family pick things off it to add to a basket. Something small (nice anodised valve caps) or a tyre or handlebar tape nobody in SA stocks, etc. and someone places a single order.

On the subject of wheels......I have a set of Mavic Open Pro rims (36H 622x15), which although probably over 20 years old, they are in very good nick. What's the view of their suitability for gravel grinding, and/or some local Gran Fondo races?

The rims are currently on 105/Ultegra hubs, so presumably they'd need to be built over on a more robust (MTB?) set of hubs, but I'd appreciate people's view on a. the robustness of the rims and b. the 'limitation' of the rim width.

They will work just fine.

R24 999 from Cycle4Life for Crossrip 2

Would like 105 components for that price like on Giant TCX SLR 2

that new Tiagra is very good. I have it on a bike and am impressed. Only gripe so far is that the shifting is too smooth, not enough "klunk" when shifting. Can be seen as good or bad.

Bump.

Anyone else with a view?

Would running the 105/ultegra hubs just trash them?

What about puncture protection with these rims? (I'm a roadie so my apologies, but tubeless seems to be all the rage!)

Don't know if what I say will be of assistance as I have not done too much (400kms) gravel grinding with my set of wheels.  They are the same as yours, Ultegra et al and have shown no sign of wear.  (I grease the cones often)  I have Gatorskins as a tire liner so in essence, running two tires.  No punctures so far......

Thanks Sepia. I seem to remember reading about your gatorskin liners. Did you rule out 'standard' tyre liners? If so, why?

I ruled out standard liners even though I have them because

1)  Seemed to have thin side casing and could fit.

2)  Light enough

3)  Tire feels exceptionally hard with the two "skins" and I run 4.5 off road with no punctures or snake bites.

4.) Had used G/skins lying about = cheap.

5.) Liners move about when fitting so I was never sure they were in the right place.

Most of all, I had no use for the old tires and thought about how to get less punctures than what I was getting at the time.  To date, none.

36 hole Open Pros have been the bullet proof standard since Julius Caesar fitted a set to his chariot.

Rims do not directly affect puncture protection, tyres do; both by virtue of the type and also the size.

Sheldon Brown knows a bit about bicycles and has published a table showing that on 15mm internal diameter rims(yours) you can conservatively run anything between a 23mm and a 32mm tyre.

So you can run all UCI approved CX tyres or even 32mm Gatorskins. The latter would give you an almost iron clad guarantee on the gravel. at lowish pressures you may even get a decent ride out of it.

Don't try and improve matter by fitting tyre liners. They increase your chances of getting a flat by having a second object between the rim and the tyre. No good can come of it.

If you are braver than me, you can try and set things up tubeless. I wouldn't though.

If you service your rims properly, they would have no problem standing up to gravel

That was the long version.

The short version follows below:

They will work just fine.
