Building a Cyclo Cross bike

Thanks chaps. I am very keen to see her. Thanks to Nerd for being so accommodating with all of my questions. And thanks to Ryan for helping me get it to Durban (and I am sure for a lot of advice to come).

I don't have much cash at the moment so the build will be a slow one. I love my research so will be looking at where I can get my best bang for my buck (105 v Ultegra for example! Is the R2500 extra really worth it?).

I am liking those AC wheels more and more.

In my opinion go for 105. That stuff works hard and will take the beating offroad riding will give it without wearing out as fast as Ultegra (and its cheaper to replace when it does). I have 105 on my CX bike and love it.

If you consider the first time you ride through a puddle of mud, the weight "penalty" you pay for 105 over Ultegra will be completely void...

Spend the extra you saved on going tubeless. I have managed to get my Conti CX race (folding bead) tyres to work tubeless, but next time I need tyres I would definitely get some of the new tubeless ready takkies (like the new Bontrager's)

Thanks GT Jimmy, that is the type of direction/advice that I am looking for.

Where are you getting your tubeless ready tyres from?

I haven't been able to source any in JHB - But now that I think about it I haven't asked Grant at Sprockett & Jack. He or Hunter Cycling would be your best bet...

If you don't win at your LBS you may have to get some online.

I'll give Grant a call and see what he has to offer and let you know.

Dual Compound, Foldable, 120Tpi Casing.

Shameless plug but I can help...

You can also get Ritchey WCS tyres (700x35) on the Bicicletta online store.

Thats what I have. They are just very expensive for the 120tpi

What cassette ratio and which type rear deraillur (short or medium cage) are you guys using?

11-28 Med cage.

Med cage so I can push the cassette higher if I need to.

I'm running a 105 short cage with an 11-28T and a 50-34T chain ring. To work out if you need a short or medium cage do this sum:

(Number of teeth on big chain ring - number of teeth on small chain ring)+(number of teeth on largest cog in cassette - number of teeth on smallest cog on cassette)

Mine comes to 33 I think. A short cage can handle up to 34 (or less)

Each derailleur should have a quoted tooth range. Mine was rated at 34 or less so I was fine.

Short cage is more out of the way...

Have any of you been able to consider those American Classic Wheels that I posted last week?

They should do the trick. Low spoke count on the front wheel for me - guess it depends what you plan on doing with the bike. I see they are out of stock though...
