Cotic Solaris - Hope Single Speed hub - 1x6 gear conversion

So I'm building a Solaris. Yup, awesome bike.

The challenge is budget for new wheels is non-existent and life's too short to ride rubbish wheels.

So.....

I'm going to use the wheels off my SS (On One Inbred 29er - Flows on Hope Trials/Single Speed rear hub - which can apparently take 6 cogs)

The plan is as follows:

  • Choose 6 cogs from various 9-spd cassettes and use 9-speed spacing.
  • Use a short cage DA rear derailleur
  • Use a 9-speed MTB shifter
  • Use a 34t NW chainring

I'm hoping to be able to have something like 30-26-22-18-14-12

All the research I've done suggests that this will work - the only thing I'm slightly concerned about is dropping the chain by not using a clutch RD.

A mate of mine runs a hope N/W with a 9spd xt no clutch no dropped chains... rode Dusi2C, JHB2C etc... fine

It will be a cool project

*edit

Also rides with a Dura Ace thumbie ha ha

Yes - friction thumbie would be the answer here...

yeah i agree, if you running only 6 spd a thumbie would be ideal...

Now im wondering... Ive recently seen the SRAM DH X1 7spd cluster, i wonder if that would fit on an SS hub???

That comes with its own 7 spd shifter and special cassette...

Hmmm

I see it only works on their XD driver, damn

And cost guys, cost.

My idea is a parts-bin setup using stuff I already have.

I won't lie, a sexy Dura Ace RD on my Solaris should look oh-so purty.

I'm used to climbing most stuff on 32-17, 18 or 19 so to have a 34-30 should expand my climbing abilities a great deal before I kick into "third gear" (walking)

I think I have a neat Deore 9-speed shifter in a box somewhere that should work.

The alternative is a new wheelset, Zee RD and new 10-speed shifter. But why follow the crowd?

I have a 9 spd xtr rapid rise rear if you want it...

Thanks, I'll let you know if the DA doesn't work out.

I may only get to play with this next week, depending on the family's weekend plans.

I don't know.
