Rude mountain bikers on illegal trails - Signal Hill, CT

It's very simple. If you must ride illegal trails on table mtn, just remember trail runners and walkers have right of way. This means get out of their way quickly. Also expect to be told off for riding the trail. Small price to pay and way better than the R500 fine you get if Craig catches you!

I'm all for sharing trails with other users but if the trail is clearly marked "no mountain biking" - surely the mtb'ers are the ones in the wrong?

I fully agree. The argument should end at the No MTB'ing sign. Whether or not the trail runners are rude to mountain bikers is irrelevant. I would like to see Sanparks / Cape Nature (who ever's jurisdiction this falls under) to arrest the rogue mountain bikers, charge them for trespassing and impound their equipment, and for good measure let the court sell off the assets used in committing the crime.

OK maybe a bit harsh, but under no circumstances (apart from the Zombie Apocalypse) is it OK to ride illegally on running / hiking trails.

To those who wish to discuss the habits and manner of trail runners, start a fresh thread please.

This is a trail I ride quite often, and so far the only people who have been complaining were the trail runners.

People who walk their dogs get out of the way (and of course I take the time to thank them for it), and if one is accommodating to a fellow trail user the feeling is mutual I have experienced.

Secondly there is only a notice that no mountain bikers  are allowed on the trails towards Lions head. I haven't seen anything prohibiting the ride on the way down.

Since I have my fully paid up activity permit to ride within table mountain reserve area (and loyally pay my taxes there) I can only think that it is fair the trail should be shared. No rude language needed.

Then engage with the decision makers rather than taking the law into your own hands. I am sure that there are already discussions in this regard. Every rogue rider out there makes any constructive discussion about sharing resources so much harder.

also recon pats track is fair game as the sign as you noted is towards signal Hill. Parts track had been a mtb trail from before discussions over wheel sizes were even thought of

Of all those words, the bold makes the most sense. Steps towards sharing is already underway, but swearing as an argument only reinforces the notion that sharing will not be possible.

I think I know the guys who ride there, they spend a lot of time talking about 'angry stuff' more than changing people's minds about the possibility of sharing.. so much for winning people over. The divide will stay around a bit longer then.

Following the Tokai incident, the trail runners have already formed an opinion on mtb'ers, sure it was a different circumstance but I believe the words exchanged were pretty harsh. Pity these situations are confrontational rather than educational.

There are so many points in this thread that show the value of sharing but in one foul encounter years worth of effort can be lost.
