Is there a standard for which side the front brake lever goes on?

By having the front on the left for me means my right hand is free to shift the rear and to grab your bottle or camelbak mouth piece, you don't shift that much on the front and if single ring nothing at all. But there is no right or wrong way, each to his own.

Which ever hand you do one handed wheelies with, that is the hand that operates the rear brake. Its pretty straight forward really, no need for confusion.

You should be braking both front and rear equally and simultaneously anyway if you do it right, so suddenly riding a bike that is the "wrong" way around should not cause you to suddenly go over the handlebars. If you brake that hard with one brake only, then it just means that your technique is wrong. My cheap 2c for what it's worth.

@BruceM - what brakes are they? Some avids you can just unbolt and turn around to suit your preference, Shimanos you need to remove the brake hose and swop those around.

My suggestion, if you are not comfortable unbolting hoses etc, pop past the LBS you bought the bike from and ask them to do it for you as you are not comfortable with the brakes in that orientation.

Generally LBS guys or girls dont ask on brake preference, its up to the buyer to stipulate if they think its the wrong way around, as the bikes come like this from the factory and its up to the consumer to decide.

Get the LBS to do it for you then you can be happy there are no issues with air in the system etc.

If you have avids however - take a pic and post it here - we can let you know if they are the reversible ones or not.

But what about no-handed wheelies then?

I think Merida and Silverback are the brands who have rear break on the right. From my knowledge, other brands have it the other way around.

This might be a SA thing too, because I've never noticed this on any other bike I've ridden or owned while living in London.

For me, right should always be front. Same as motorbikes.

Have a good look at them, I know mine can be swapped over in a minute or two.

Not sure if that is the case with all types.

I believe this is the case. You might lose a drop of oil, but generally suppose to be an easy swap.

I can only pop wheelies with both hands. Is it advisable to get right and left brakes for rear brake? :-) just kidding. I am still learning to do a proper wheelie. All my wines2 whales pics next year will be on my rear wheel.

If you guys see a pic of me on my front, please send some flowers to the ER. :-)

Back to op, i am right handed and right brake is rear. I used to take my water bottle with right, but tought myself to take with left seeing that i almost crashed a few times when i was tired, needed to drink and could not get to my brake quick enough.

I bought a Mongoose MTB in December and the front brake is on the right. I've gotten used to this and as someone stated above I tend to use both brakes equally, for the most part.

your front brake usually goes on the side of your dominant hand , because that is the more coordinated hand.

if youre forced into the situation where you relying on instinct to pull your brakes, you want the coordinated hand to be doing the important braking

What Nigel said. YOu just need to check whether the brakes you have will allow you to swap the levers to the other side of the handle bar. The fluid reservoir is the factor here that determines this as you could end up with leaks if not compatible and hence why some people are saying swap the hoses.

I think all avids are interchangeable to right or left and I know with the juicy you move the entire lever and bracket over and some of the others you need to leave the front clamp as they are side specific

Some companies brakes only allow the rear on the right because of cable length, I did a brake upgrade which required me to switch the brakes around. I did kiss dirt unlearning however painful lessons teach you the fastest!

Mine is also set up right front, but mainly because I am right handed and have a better feeling in feathering the front brakes to scrup speed. The left is not as accurate
