Trail bike <30K (Giant Trance 27.5 2 only option?)

Any recommendation on the Forks for these140mm AM/trail bikes? A lot of the reviews of the Fox Float suggest that when really pushing the bike on the rough stuff the fork is the weak spot. Everyone loves the Pike but that is not an option in my price class, not sure if the other Rockshox options like the Revelation / Sektor are much better?

Get one with a RS fork.

Nothing wrong with the higher end Fox forks, but if it says EVO on it, as anything that you'll find on a Trance does, is an unmitigated pile of steaming horse dung.

Or find yourself a 2013 or 2014 Trance X or SX and upgrade the fork with the change.

As capable as it is I wouldn't stage race a Reign.

Between the Merida and the Giant I'd go for the Giant.

1. Merida is not available locally (yet).

2. Trance is a better all-round bike I'd say. Suspension needed less TLC to get dialed and it's happier through the tight stuff.

Also a good option

If all goes well we should have one on test soon enough.

Let us have a go at one.  ;)

Yo, I have "tested" that slider 1 before and it is a bike that left me with a BIG smile on my face after every ride :)

Keen to give it a go as it's not quite on the same page a the Merida and Giant ito geometry. Then we're going to give 2 or 3 bikes on the OTHER side of the 1-40 / Trance spectrum a go. All of them with roughly the same amount of travel.

With you here. Only thing is I wouldn't ride even a high end Fox 32 on anything over 120 / MAX 130mm travel. Once you're over 130 it becomes a very expensive pool noodle. And one that doesn't float.

On a 29er the cut off would be 120mm for me.

You want mine for that? As a comparative frankenbike, that is.

Hey, if it has 2 wheels I'll give it a go! Hopefully we'll be bringing you reviews on a Slider, SB6C / SB5C, Banshee Spitfire (killer bike), Giant Reign, early thoughts on the Momsen Vipa Trail proto, Pyga Pascoe and some others within the first half of the year.

Even taking delivery of an electric assist bike this Friday. Like I said, if it has 2 wheels I'll give it a go.

Where are you going to get a Giant Trance Advanced 2 for <R30k?

Yeah, my bad...I did not realise the advanced means "carbon. I am definitely shopping alu - so that should read Trance 27.5 2! I can I fix that in header?

So after a quick stop at some bike shops yesterday, something I hear a lot is "these bikes are not popular in South Africa and we don't bring them in...".

So is 140mm overkill for SA and only bikes <120mm worth buying unless you do dedicated downhill? (The rest of the world seem pretty much happy with "trail bikes").

What do you guys think that are on > 120mm trail bikes?

PS: I mean my old Giant VT-2 had variable suspension 5.2 or 5.7 setting and I think a 120mm fork. That was about 8 years ago. Even though I was in my 20s and a lot fitter, that bikes was a blast to ride even in 40km races were I could still be fairly competitive for a recreational rider. I would like to think the all-mountain / trail bikes of today are a lot more versatile...

...

They're not selling any cause there's nothing to buy! And yes, SA has been obsessed with Marathon / XC bikes with only 100mm of travel for too long.

There's this rumor (spread by uninformed shop idiots) that a longer travel bike will be slower.

They're talking BS. Only reason they won't sell is because they won't stock them. It's a self fulfilling prophecy - have a look at how popular the new Trance and Reign are - they can't bring them in fast enough.

2015 Trance 2 - the end - and you rode happily ever after  ... They are everywhere...parts - support and the shops that talk bad about a Trance just cannot sell you one...

Shop around some shops are up to R5k more. You should be able to buy a 2015 for probably around R25K.
