Tubeless Conversion

Need help with this.

On my previous attempt I used the tubeless kit with the rim tape. Recently after fitting new tyres in December all was fine untill recently when it started leaking at one of the spokes and the valve. Removed the rim tape and bought some duct tape, taped the rim and leaked at the valve. Saw the valve was fubar, bought a new valve.

Problem is now that it is leaking at the valve insert at the rim. Replaced the duct tape and with an overlap at the valve insert, still leaking. Bought some silicon tape and also with an overlap and still leaking. Is it possible that the lack of sealant could be the cause that it is not sealing.

The air tends to come out at the valve hole but it could be leaking into the rim from anywhere along the length of sealing tape.

- Check for rim cracks or imperfections in the sealing tape elsewhere than at the valve hole.

- Sealant should help.

- Is the valve hole in rim perhaps deformed slightly so the conical seat on the valve does not seal?

- Do not tighten the valve nut more than hand tight. If too tight it can warp the 'bed' of the rim out of shape.

- Check the valve core is tight and if so, try a new core.

- Is it a tubeless compatible rim? - some rims do not have an airtight weld/seam....although it seems you previously had a successful tubeless conversion on this rim.

Good luck.

Replace the valve and install proper tubeless rimtape. The one you buy in the kit.

Sometimes you need to cut a bigger/neater hole in the tape for the valve to go through.

If the valve bed doesnt seat properly then it will leak there.

Gorilla tape bru!! make sure it seats properly into the rim bead as not to obstruct the tyres bead.

Make a very small hole for the valve, you need to almost force the valve thru the "gaatjie" and then tighten the lock ring

Used to struggle a lot, now I use yellow rim sealing tape. Clean rim and take off all other kinds of tapes. Roll the tape over rim, go around about 3 times. Make hole for valve, very small with something sharp. Press your presta valve through hole and tighten nut by hand. Replace tyre and fill with a few scoops of stans sealant. Close tyre and bump it all the way round by hand. Put tyre flat on ground and inflate. Happy riding![emoji6]

Also +1 for Gorilla tape. I used duct tape for a while with some success. The real Gorilla tape is far better though. My tyre now loses hardly any pressure with one layer of tape around the rim. The duct tape starts leaking after a while. Not sure if the sealant can affect the glue.

I had the same problem with Duct tape leaking after three months. Replaced duct tape with Gorilla tape. Have had no leaks for nine months.

Thanks for all the replies. Will try the Gorilla tape method. Where do I source this tape?

Simple. Add recommended amount of Stan's to the tyre. Inflate. If leaking around valve, place valve at lowest point and bounce the tyre on the ground. Stan's will splash around and seal the gaps that the air is escaping from. I have done this on at least my last 5 tubeless conversions with no issue.
