Knee giving issues

I have been training harder than usual the last few weeks for the coming 99er, Tour de PPA and the coming Argus.

2 weeks ago i got home after riding in a terrible head wind. My left knee was a bit sore but i did not give it a 2nd thought. On sunday i went for a 100km ride again, 75km in while climbing a hill i got a dull pain in my left knee when i applied downward pressure. I got off the bike and rested a bit but once i got back on i could not put any force on the leg - Phoned my wife and she came and got me. I decided to take it easy and give it a bit of a rest.

Tuesday evening the leg was feeling fine and i thought i would go for a easy spin in the suburb. Got on the bike everything was fine till i tried to climb over the kraai fontein bridge on brighton road. As i peddles i could feel "pressure" building and then my knee made a loud "Klak" and the dull pain was back. Its was not really pain full but more of a discomfort.

Its Thursday today and again the knee is feeling fine. Are there any messages/ treatments one can do on a knee to get it to recover?  I am planning to stay off the bike now till at least sunday.

What is strange is that i can go for a short run and i don't have any pain at all.

Any suggestions? Remedies...?

Have a bike set up, something changed, like cleat position or so. I had the same with my right knee with so much pain i could barely walk. After setup never had it again.

Bike fit could be the issue. I saw you previous thread about buying a new bike recently. Did you have it set up professionally for you? If not you could be getting knee because of a bad fit.

Knee problems may sometimes be a symptom of overtraining.

^^^ Correct. Overuse injuries. Especially if you are training harder than usual and your body isn't used to it.

Saddle height maybe incorrect, as others say check your bike fit.

Could also be from over training without enough recovery between, your body needs to adjust for the harder training

You muscle usage is different when cycling and running... so is perhaps why there is no pain as there is no over extending of muscles when running.

Get in a Very Very Very warm bath and stretch , do it morning and Night and after rides.

Found that warm bath stretch work like a bomb..... try it.

Obviously Bike fit is priority -This is only when pushing muscle beyond what they use to.

That loud "klak" sounds like you might have a small semi lunate meniscal tear that is giving you trouble - consider a visit to a good knee guy in CT....

perhaps the same lad who opened Greg Minnaar's knee.... :)

I did get a bike fitment not sure how pro it was but i did get one. Have changed shoes as well so it could be a cleat position issue. Ill have to check that out.

Did you change shoes after your bike fit?

I had the exact same issue in December when I was increasing Mileage & Climbing!

Sounds very much like Overuse and also called Runners Knee or Patella Tendinitis...

Go see a Chiro & get massaged & strapped.

Ice as well. (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off, then 15 minutes again twice a day)

It has helped me.

Oh yes, lots of stretching...Quads especially!

I didn't even take anti-inflammatories.
