Hi Gents ,

Need some advise regarding the above mentioned,

I did a 4 hour race this past weekend and since the race my privates   been numb. This was my first long ride on my newish bike with a super soft well padded saddle.

I have been doing some research on this topic and most evidence concur that it is caused by my saddle,

Seeing that I am looking at a new saddle , I was thinking why not go pure carbon( no padding)

Based on my two bikes , the one with very little padding is much more comfortable on the long rides then the super soft one ...

SOOOOO.....

Have any of you gone pure?

Does it work for you?

Tnx

Ramster, many years ago when I was racing in Switzerland I used a carbon seat, no padding, and it was then very comfortable, BUT then you must train everyday so you're bum can get used to the hard seat....Its definitely not for someone that rides 3 to 4 times a week.

Currently I'm using a very hard saddle, very little padding and it works better for me than a super soft thick padded saddle.

If the saddle has too much padding then it "moulds" itself to your body and cuts off blood flow as you have mentioned, BUT if you get a "pure" saddle as you put it then you may be supporting your body on the soft tissue of your perinium and cuasing the same result.

It lies more in the width of the saddle and if it supports your sit bones properly and there is no soft tissue contact. I for example ride the widest saddle that Specialized makes (155mm) even tho I am a skinny oke...it has changed how I am able to ride, for example I can do a 24 hour race - 20 hours on the bike and have no issues at all...

The super soft ones with a lot of padding tends to bunch up or put pressure on places that shouldn't have pressure. Saddles with less padding are generally more comfortable, because you sit on your sit bones and there's no excess padding to put pressure on essentials.

I had this problem after doing the 1 Tonner (163kms).  No feeling down there for 8 days!!!!  I have since tilted my saddle forward a bit (maybe 2-3 degrees) and have not had a problem since.  But then I have only ridden a maximum of 110kms in a ride since then.  I ride quite a bit (800 - 1000kms a month) so my butt is well worn-in.  Try adjusting your saddle position before spending a fortune on a new one.

This is the one im considering.

Had a look at the angle of the saddle and it is +- 5mm lower in front then at the back, same as my other one ( thinner one )

Saddles are very much a personal choice. A saddle that is comfortable for one rider may not be so for another. I agree with Dazshell that you need to find the right set up of the saddle for comfort. I also tried many before I found one that fit the shape of my body. Ask your LBS if you can test a saddle for purchasing it. Could save you buying something that may not be what you need.

chat to your LBS about a test saddle and more importantly you got the right width and position.

saddles are a personal thing. what works for 1 doesn't work for the next person.

try and buy is the best solution.

No matter what seat I ride the nuts will go numb if the tilt is not right. So for me personally I won't say it's the type of saddle that cause your nuts to go Numb but the setup itself.

P.S. I have & have ridden both i.e. pure carbon & carbon with padding.

My saddle has very little give, got a spare saddle from friend after mine met the N2. He's a massive oke so it's been heavily compacted and I've just not bothered to get another cos it just works, no numbness ever!

i use a full carbon saddle with a pressure relief cutout section in the middle and its the most comfortable saddle iv ever tried, in my opinion its not about the padding but the shape of the saddle, it took 3-4 rides to get used to it and now im extremely happy, I agree with the above statement of tilt also being very important especially for the way you ride and the position on the bike you spend most time in. I say go for it and it looks super cool

I bought a full carbon saddle on the hub just because it was dirt cheap (R280). Thought I will just put it back up for sale if it doesn't work for me, and about 2 years later I'm still using it. My Fizik Arione sitting on a shelf in the garage ever since. Best ever favour I did to my behind. With some tweaking, I found the sweetspot and its the most comfortable saddle I've owned. Just remember to stand up when you see a bump in the road. A bump from that carbon on your balls is damn Eina.
