A friend knows him... just checked.. 3:58 (confirmed by ActionPhoto pics). still d@mn impressive if you ask me!

Ah. Seems I was wrong - could have sworn it was a 3h28 or something stupid...

Stil helluva impressive, given that he'd have had to get out of the saddle for pretty much everything but the downhills.

There didn't happen much with the bike this weekend.... I only washed it, and took those pegs off. I'm sure it was more than 1kg weight loss with just those four pegs

After that, I pumped up the tires, and rode about 10km.  It almost killed me. The riding position isn't great, and I have to stand pretty much to get the power down...

And so the second thoughts begin....

Just a few updated pics. I'll start to take it apart this weekend to service all bearings, brakes etc.

You can see the damage on the rear rim I was talking about. I'm thinking of just sanding it down to the bare metal....

And I also want to re-paint the seat post and fork..

So I have stripped dowm the Trek. It's now ready for a good clean, and service...

The Crank is still in great condition, so I'm leaving it as is.

All the sealed hub bearings seems better than I thought. It was just not tightened correctly, so I'll fix that once I put it together.

The headset bearings are ok. I am struggling to get the fork out though. I don't understand how it fits or comes apart. I still want to repaint it, so I'll have a look again.
I think the friction that I felt came from the gyro. Probably have to bend those small tabs over to tighten it a bit.

The short cable that splits to the rear brake is totally worn out. So, a new one will required.

I found a second tube in the front wheel Probably like a tyre liner. So I took that out. The one tube was also heavily patched. The plan is to put two new ones on, and take at least one spare tube along....

Below are the tyres that I am looking at for the event. Giant Sole-O. 20x2.1

Then Lastly I'm not sure what to do with the rims. I'm going to try and sand the sidewall down so at least it will be smooth, even if it looks a bit dodgy.

Just a quick update before I post some more pics.

Did a little bit of work on the rear rim. I sanded it down, and it looks like it will work. There are two layers. The chrome is very hard, and then there's a copper / nickel plated layer that's even harder.
but the end result will just be clean bare metal sidewalls. I'm sure the brake pads will be even grippier as well.

I also started to assemble my box for transport. It is a Mtb cardboard box, which I'm making smaller. Inside I'll fit some wooden supports and structure, especially around the crank, so the sprocket don't get damage. I travelled with my bike before, so I know exactly how the airline (mis)handle the bikes.

Starting group notification.... 8D

FML, I didn't realise how the seeding works, and would make such a difference...
Ah well. we'll have to see.

You should go-pro some training rides! That would be great to see drafting guys up and down the Chappies peak / Llandudno run!

I'll be holding thumbs for you. Take pictures and post your report here!

What's the roads like during the event?
I need some local knowledge. What would the best route be to get out from Noordhoek?

My best guess would be like the attached pic, take M35, towards the M5. Would that work?
