Gen Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Good ride by Meintjes.. impressive to only get dropped in the last km or so.. still young and the power and experience will still come
'Dale Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Julian Alaphillipe (Etixx-QuickStep) takes another second place, while Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) finishes in third.
'Dale Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Rui Costa took fourth place, while Kreuziger and Romain Bardet were in the mix too, but Valverde's win was never really in doubt.
'Dale Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Alaphilippe had to take the long way around Rodriguez in the sprint and that cost him some ground, but he was never likely to overhaul Valverde.
T-Bob Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 Strong ride and everyone tried over and over to shake him so I guess honours to him. to be honest though I can't get happy with Valverde winning anything. He sits firmly on the same rung as Vino as an unrepentant doper who has never worked to clean the sport up and still has very dubious links. I know I shouldn't be negative and find a doping thread but he really does elicit the 'oh no, anyone but him' response when you seen him hit the line.

T-Bob Posted April 27, 2015 Author Posted April 27, 2015 I watched on eurosport, was great!! Think some one on the hub said this already about a convicted doper winning... Meh It is literally painstaking to read the veiled comments in almost every corner of the cycling press about VV's win. "Valverde now has three wins to his name here and 2015 wasn’t that far off his 2006 win when he came off a win in the Flèche Wallonne and then sat tight while then team mate Joaquim Rodriguez led for much of the final hour before he won won the sprint from a group packed with fellow clients of Dr Fuentes." "While Philippe Gilbert’s Classics career appears to be waning in his 30s, Valverde is still, despite the odds, showing the youngsters exactly how its done." "Spain’s Alejandro Valverde wrapped up a truly remarkable Ardennes classics season when he won Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday aged 35, four days after the seemingly easy triumph in the Flèche Wallonne." "A substandard field significantly weakened by crashes served up a substandard winner. For all the Valverde cheerleaders’ talk of his “classy” riding style, very little of this has been in evidence over recent wins with most of his podiums coming from mostly defensive rides and remarkable endurance." "Quite a “rogue’s gallery” sprinkled throughout the top-20. Good to see one young rider on the podium." Anyway, enough of that. For me it's a slightly sour feeling from the last couple of races at the end of a great classic season. In Ardennes Meintjes deserves great respect coming from Trentino over to Belgium and doing so well. Alaphilippe was also stand out in the last week. thuthfully it seemed a very weakened field in the second half of the spring. The cobbles offered up some insights and however much you hate him Wiggins spoke with more passion and respect about Roubaix than many in recent years... and finally Quickstep, not sure if there is a record for near misses but they have to be close. Over all I'd say we've had a cracker. Great racing throughout, some 'classic' conditions thanks to mother nature, new talent coming up, questions posed about what turns a strong man into a champion, the real effect of Sparticus & Boonan over the last 10 years and so much more. I'm enrolled into Flanders and Roubaix sportives next year so I guess every time it rains I need to smile, be happy riding 5hrs on a IDT in zone 2 and I have to find every cold cobble in the western cape to ride for the next 12 months.
