Colin said “Well, I thought it was a great idea, having a signature bike as I am really into the biking and I know that Kona is a major brand. It feels good to have a respected name as a personal sponsor.”

Ben Bostrom, top 5 on a stage last years Epic. Rode back up for Sauser and Rambon.

Eric Bostrom, VERY keen MTBer.

All Hayden Bros, very good cyclist.

Troy Bayliss used to train with the Euro Pros when he was in Europe, would have been a pro cyclist if he didn't race bikes.

Cal Cratchlow, also rides a ALOT, seems like he is good mates with Cavendish.

Aldon Baker, top MX coach in USA, got most if all of his current and past clients in to cycling.

Closer to home:

Freddie Fourie, the fastest "weekend worrier" you'll ever come across on a MTB.

Many top racers have stationary bikes at MX or multiday rallye's to help prevent muscle stiffness relief and warming up before a heat. Multi SA Champ Louwrens Mahoney is a very good road and MTB cyclist. I ride as much as possible as it helps with leg strength and cardio.

Aldon Baker is a SAF boy. Used to race XC against him. He's done good for himself. Look at the athletes he's trained and there are dozens of titles now behind them. #legend

Rally driver Gugu Zulu did the Tankwa Trek with us this weekend.

He also rode Lesotho Sky last year along with Peterhansel. Both incredibly nice guys.

Peterhansel was particularly quick down some of the sketchy rocky sections creating his own lines which weren't apparent to us mere mortals.

If you are a Dakar rallye nut(like me) you will know that Peterhansel was the first participant that got "alien" status. Coma and Peterhansel both have that now as they have 5 wins each. These okes have the abbility to read terrain at racing speeds and pick a winning line.

The KTM rallye team has a airconditioned Air tent that has static bikes in them. When the riders come in, they shower, eat have massage and sleep. Then they have a 30min cycle before they rest.

Ben Bostrom AMA Superbike World Champ was showing the pros how it was done at the Epic last year. Not stopping at Waterpoints to go ahead of the bunch in backup to Sauser if he had issues. Dude is badass, also won RAAM in a 4 man team last year. Ben Spies, Cal Crutchlow, Guy Martin the list goes on!

Those Bostroms amuse me - they always sound stoned on Cafe Racer tv but great guys, funny and humble it seems. Raising fast guys on bicycle and motorbike, what happened to Craig Stone (d) doping ban?

Rode in Spain with Despres and Coma's riding buddies and let me say, these guys can RIDE! They'd both left the weekend before for Dakar prep. The guys had huge respect for Giniel saying how well he fits the spirit of Dakar. Proud moment.. Robbie Gordon got the look of disdain :)

Turns out Gracia and Cesar Rojo who designs for KTM and Mondraker also makes up part of the motley crew.. we bumped into Rojo down on the streets on a prototype dune. 'Covered in mud' is also a style on the Barca sidewalk, loved that!!

Remenber him all too well with his Kona Timefreight kit, and Camelback on. Sad that todays "fast" guys (who probably think they are the best SA ever had) would go "Aldon.... who?". And he'd probably smoke them all if he was in his prime today.

Nicolas Vouilloz, is also a legend mountain biker who is a strong rally driver as well:

  • Downhill World Champion : 1995-1999, 2001-2002

Before his injury 18 months ago he was a regular on the Enduro World Series (MTB) podiums:
