What is being done (and what are you doing) for safety

The City of Cape Town should hang its head in shame. The mayor can talk the talk, but so many fatalities in CT in such a short time is unacceptable. The Myciti buses and other vehicle drivers' attitude, impatience and smallmindedness is costing family units their father/mothers/loved ones  because of the level of intolerance and ill discipline. This city that I hail from and love IS NOT WORKING FOR ME and esp the downed cyclists

Mod note: This post was split from the thread below in order to facilitate a general discussion regarding safety in light of the recent incidents

FFS. When is a motorist going to get sued or actually go to prison for killing a cyclist? Only when this happens will drivers start to think about respecting cyclists on the road.

not just cyclist but pedestrians too.

motorists think nothing of driving right over you when crossing at a pedestrian crossing

only policing we have is the odd speed camera

RIP. That is awful. Again.

I'm a very positive guy 99.9% but for the first time ever I'm actually wondering if it's really worth it. I'm not sure if there is more reporting but if I ride dirt then there are dudes wanting to steal the bike or just have a fight with my tires and take my phone, wallet, keys...

When I ride road then it seems like the numbers are going up as well. Hell, I ride what I consider to be the 'safe' routes around CT. No Nek, no M'burg, not in my hood (Rondebosch), not to and from my front door (to save prying eyes - different subject), always where there is a big hard shoulder and we're still getting hit at Camps Bay, Llandudno, cycle path and all over.

Don't mean to sound negative and I know it's more riders, more cars, we don't help our reputation in a lot of ways etc but FFS, it's riding a bike. How dangerous should that really be?!?

Until the City of Cape Town actually takes cycling seriously and adopts a zero tolerance attitue toward motor vehicle transgressions we are not going to be any safer.

South Africa is one of the few countries where a driver who meets the minimum criteria is allowed to drive a motorvehicle. Its not too hard to get a commercial vehicle drovers license either.

Fact is our politicians are just too immature to put legislation in place that works. Everyone is so hung up on your rights that its even an infringement on a somones rights to prevent them from murdering you. Progressive constitution....progressively sick IMV.

Maybe The Cycle Tour Trust could use some of the 20mil in their kitty to fund some lawyers to make an example of some of these reckless drivers? Enough is bloody enough!

Stay wider of the riders se moer... people no longer understand nice requests, what is required is a solid life changing PK that will actually make people think twice about taking chances with other peoples lives!

The campaign is not doing enough. The city is not driving this anywhere near hard enough. Alan Winde talks about how much money cycling brings into the city due to cycling, how much of this is used to raise awareness or put in the necessary infrastructure?

Just tweeted @CityofCT, let's see how they respond.

let's take it to Mrs Zille herself?

@helenzille 2 cyclists knocked down in one week in CPT. Motorists clearly not obeying 1m law.

And when a Cyclist asks if he can join the official PPA AWARENESS ride on the 28th in his own kit, he gets a snotty reply from an elected PPA official AND FELLOW CYCLIST that he must be in the new PPA kit which cost R400.00, otherwise he'll be nothing more than a pirate rider!! :cursing:

I was going to join this ride to show solidarity, driving from the Northern Burbs, but agter this reply, I'm rather gonna go ride my Mtb on "our" trails where I'm safe from cars / trucks / busses driving over me.

Off Topic, I know, but still pertinent

I call on all Cape Town cyclists to stage a protest action on one of the main arterials in Cape Town. Let us get together in a mass show of solidarity to those who have died since January whilst cycling. I propose a slow ride down the N1 and N2 during peak hour traffic. If say ten thousand cyclists can get together and protest the lack of law enforcement, perhaps our local government may sit up and take note about real issues, and stop focusing on some laughing and grinning idiot in the papers.

@helenzille - Time to earn your stripes. We are G A T V O L ! ! ! What do you intend to do about it?

[ Perhaps even stage a sit down on the cycle tour route say a 100m before the finish line - that will be sure to grab international headlines ]

Wannabe, I'm with you on this my friend. It seems to me the only thing the PPA want's is to sell jerseys. I do not get the sense they give a crap about the actual campaign.

RIP,and may our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of the unfortunate cyclist.

A month or so ago, I started a thread about creating a memorial to all those cyclists lost for the love of their sport....similar to the Rhino awareness campaign...this is not about a once a year awareness ride organised by PPA or even being in the safe cycling group at the Cycle Tour.

This memorial could show the number of unfortunate cycling souls lost on our roads and be updated weekly/monthly. Perhaps when people out there (who aren't on the hub) start seeing the number of unfortunate and certainly unnecessary deaths, they might take note of their actions on the road and be a bit more courteous to cyclists.

Once again, I also encourage in the interest of solidarity that those that partake in the Cycle Tour, wear a black arm-band for the memory of those cyclists lost on our roads.

to me this is a right can of kakesisters.

The jersey is but ONE way of increasing awareness of giving cyclists space. They are using the jersey in the same way as getting stickers on cars, get the message to the masses.

I see this mass ride as a way of protest, as it will highlight the campaign - while wearing the jersey. BUT ! is the R400 price just going to the cost of the jersey ........

Because a question one should ask .....why are these jersey's not in the goody bag's of all argus entrants for free?
