Fat bike - what's it like? Will I manage?

I'm sure I will enjoy these but their price point is ridiculous. Spez spec and weight is very similar to the Titan.

Maybe so for Surly, 9ZERO7, Salsa - but you get what you pay for. OnOne comes in at a pretty competitive price for a very well thought out bike - correct geometry for what a fatbike will get used for in SA, IMO.

Titans weight and price?

Must say I don't get the fat bike thing... 4 years ago EVERYBODY I know sold 26ers in favour of 29ers. If you'd ask them why, you'd get the identical response from everyone: "dude, cause they're just soooooo much faster and they roll over any obstacle as if it didn't even exist."

Fair point. But if speed is so important then WHY on earth are people now opting for fatties given that these bikes are by far the slowest bikes that ever hit our shores.

Then I get the argument of it being a fun bike, my question is just whether a fatty really compares to a long travel trail bike in the fun department? And similarly, why didn't anybody ever consider then "fun" factor when swapping their 26ers for 29ers?

Whatever. I bought a Spez Fatboy and ride it regularly for training. Amazing bike, does not feel like a fatty at all.

Usually ride a Trek DS 29", but I rotate my rides between my 2 babies.

Oh. and the Spez is an absolute bargain at 12500.

Where did you get a fatboy for 12500?

Who says it has to make sense?  ^_^  Life doesn't make sense and neither do the things different people enjoy.  MTBers are forever finding different ways of challenging themselves and/or having fun.  Why does a bike have to be the fastest, plushest, lightest, the most efficient etc to be enjoyed?  By those measures SS bikes, fixies, unicycles etc don't make sense either.  Who cares?  Don't over think these things, just enjoy

That said, personally, I would not want a fatbike as my only bike.  My view is that it is a nice toy to have in the quiver if you can afford more than one  bike.

Simple: I am riding places I couldn't before. I am sure you guys can ride everywhere already but we are talking about mere mortals now.

I wasn't arguing, merely asked why the same people that bought 29ers 4 years ago purely because of the lower rolling resistance are now opting for fatties that are harder to pedal than a makro bike with permatubes... Im also curious what terrain you can ride with your fatty that you can't ride with a dual sus? As far as I understood sand, mud and snow are better on a fatty. What else is easier on a fatty that we tend to see on our SA trails?

Anything that needs traction. Loose gravelly or rocky climbs. Roots. Technical descents for bang gatte like me. It was never a quest to go faster.

BTW: I never went to 29er because of rolling resistance so am not qualified to answer the question.

I haven't seen many 26er roadbikes so I suspect that rolling resistance is not the only factor.

If I could I would have one! I lile the look of it. Who cares what others think? If it sucked I would sell it. Thats if I had one any way, and if I could I would have had one. Or two whatever.

I want one to ride on the beach in the mornings from Melkbos to Woodbridge Island and back. Reckon that could be fun. A nice cheapy you can throw on to the rubbish pile after a year cause you know the sea salt will kill it anyway

Which model Fatboy is it?
