What Shoes?

Some advice please, good Hubbers.

I've been riding the same pair of low end MTB shoes I bought as a complete newbie many years ago. They cost me very little, have served me well, and are now falling apart from years of abuse and neglect. I don't even know what brand they are to be embarrassingly honest.

But it's replacement time and I've no idea what to buy. I'm big and heavy (6'5" and 100kg after a good supper) and my bike is good but nothing special, so to have carbon soled shoes seems a little silly for me. At any rate, what should I be looking for and considering?

For example, I like the look of these Shimano M089's but I've got no idea if they're any good. post-32964-0-47467100-1424860049_thumb.png

Shimano of course guarantee that they have more technology than the space shuttle, that I'll be eleventy three percent faster on the bike and will have to beat Kate Upton out of my bed with a stick, but I'm just not certain.

They look alright. What's comfy is comfy I guess.

What does look good about them is they don't look finiky to clean. Many pricey shoes seem to enjoy putting places that mud will never ever ever escape from.

I had the same ol' Olympic shoes for ages, until I realised they would probably die after I would.

Replaced them with some Giros and they just fit, and by fit I mean I have no idea why I was using uncomfortable clog-feeling shoes for so long.

Feet are different: if they are nice, grab em (also account for a little bit of walking and hill clambering when you try them out). Don't worry about shoe weight (like you mentioned).

Shoes is something very personal.

It's not something you can purchase online without trying it first.

As much as I love the Specialized Sworks Shoe it not comfortable to me cause of my board foot and high arch.

Go personally test a few shoes and then decided.

For somebody to say that one shoe or brand is best is not true as it's something person.

What works for 1 doesn't work for the next.

Personally I can't see myself using any shoe but SIDI. I find even the entry level ones very comfortable and the sizing is consistent throughout the range - I'm a 44 in all their shoes. But as was said before, people (and their tastes) differ so try a few if you can. Be sure to include SIDI in your list though...

Had Shimano shoes for 5 Years now. Great quality, comfortable, good value.

Just make sure you try before you buy. Shimano has funny sizes.: I'm normally a 43 and I wear a Shimano 45. For around the R1000 mark you are not going to do better than Shimano.

Spez makes great shoes and so does Mavic. Although I would only go for their premium options.

If you are a race snake and have lots of money to spend: SIDI. (I guess, no interest)

As mentioned before try them on and see what works for you.

Don't go for Spez premium options. They are to hard / plastic, you'll have blisters for months, go for the cheapies, they use softer material, and more of it eg. more cushioning.

I am also in the market for new shoes and also like the MO89s but there are also the MO88s that also look cool.

The MO89s from what I have read have a flexible mid sole that flexes to go with the natural pedal stroke of your feet but not sure if this would compromise a solid platform.

The louis Garne shoes are also cool looking. When I have the cash then these are two I will try as they haves hoes in my budget.

Agree it is a must fit before you buy as each foot is different.

That is nonsense.

I guess yours are either too small/big.

Well therein lies the rub.

Anybody know anybody that stocks Shimano shoes in JHB? So far i've only seen them advertised on CWC.

What area of jhb you in and what's your budget?

Cycle lab in centurion & fourways, hotspot in PTA, Cajees in Fourways & centurion all stock shimano (not the same models though). The M089 is the replacement of the M088 btw.

I've spent the last 2 weeks trying on a butt load of shoes. I found northwave and shimano to be the only brands that didn't pinch me somewhere out the box, so I ordered a set of NW yesterday.

Used to have Sidis, but after they let me down I decided that I wanted something else. Been riding Shimano for the last couple of years and have been really impressed. You can't go wrong. Super comfortable and durable.

Thanks Cairbre - where did you order from?

Of course they are to big or to small, they where not made from a cast of my feet.

I have two pairs of Spez shoes, one pair entry lv and one pair top the range, I did the 24 Hr in the entry lv pair, they just a lot more comfy, no hot spots - both are the same size, I did manage a 300km ride this pass weekend with then top of the range pair but felt like I was walking on coals afterwards.
