Hi Hubbers,

thought this post might help some of us doing the Epic.

What are some of  the must have's for the event?

  • Chamois cream
  • multi tool
  • chain breaker
  • spare chain link
  • spare dérailleur hanger
  • Bombs and adapter
  • spare tubes
  • second set of gloves

Chamois cream is the most important thing!

Might sound a bit daft, but the most recent flu jab. Some riders are pigs and clear their oysters anywhere... Riding with a raging fever is ***!

You might also want to consider sleeping tablets - they come in very handy with all the noise in the camp.

Lots of plastic bags to keep things dry if it chucks it with rain.

Duct tape - it fixes anything, from stuffed tyres to wounds..

If you need reading glasses take a pair - Trying to fix a puncture that you can't see because it is blurred is annoying.

Cash, because the food is generally ***, and there is usually a Steers or some or other franchise on site.

I haven't and will never do the Epic, but out of curiosity, where do one pack all this stuff while riding or do you leave it at the campsite?

I keep all of mine in this. And I also carry 2 litres of rehydrate, Woolies baby food pouches (banana & guava) and an epipen... As a general rule, you never really need all this stuff until you go decide to go riding without it...

I have a BIG list of stuff you can take.... but you don't have room in the bag for everything. You are welcome to it if you want it.

Must haves

1 - Sunblock - factor 50 that can last for the whole day. I also carry a tiny emergency tube - and my partner takes lip ice

2 - small saline eye drops you can keep in your pocket

3 - spare brake pads you carry with, as well as a spare pin for the brakes (chances of finding one in the mud if you drop it are small)

4 - Put slime in your spare tube

5 - spare valve and spare valve core

6 - spare cleat bolt

7 - eyedropper bottle of chain lube

8 - small patch kit

9 - Kindle

10 - Probiotics - take these every day - twice a day

11 - Bactrim or similar in case you get an upset stomach (you will need a script)

12 - duct tape

13 - some small butt cream containers you can take with - use if needed.

14 - bombs and plugs - some extra big plugs too.

15 - topical anti inflammatory cream - DO NOT TAKE oral NSAIDS at any time - search and you will find posts on this by me.

15 - small spray bottle of surgical spirits - for applying post shower to the nether regions.... sterility is everything in preventing saddle sores and infections. apply pre butt cream as well

I am also a believer in a new set of kit for every day - the washing service while good, is not good enough after a dirty day - and kit sometimes does not get a chance to dry if the weather is a bit off.
