A couple reviews say the music playback isnt that great.

I can't see it being that good. A good transducer has to deliver the entire dynamic range to your ear, awaken all the senses and prickle all the hairs that need prickling .

In order for these to work they would have to generate a heavy vibration for the ear to hear the top ends, I just can't see that working.

I posted this last night, it gives a good idea how low end and top end sound waves look and work .

So then the question is Wyatt...

What are the best headphones money can buy.

But i mean THE BEST.

There is actually no such thing.

I will say one thing and someone else will say another.

But the best headphones you would want would be the Grado GS 1000 i

I remember you telling us about these. Even the box was noteworthy IIRC

Every single place that sells electronics.

The world is your behind the neck oyster.

Just 1 pair?! I think you need a few pairs - Grado for rock and orchestral, Audio Technica for that awesome sound stage (movies, gaming, some electronic music) and then Beyers for electronic music and general purpose :)

I wish I had those Grados, sadly only at the sr80 end....

With a decent headphone amp and good source playback one pair will do the job.

I would however love a pair of Audeze LCD-3's.

True, but then the whole hobby falls over into subjectivity and trying to source obscure tubes from some warehouse in Russia. So yes, its very much a personal preference kinda deal..

That said, planar headphones are meant to be incredible and probably could replace all your other pairs.

But I can't afford my bike habits, let alone consider any headphone upgrades :)

My headphones hardly ever come out, when I listen to my speakers it feels as if I am using headphones .
