Vinyl is for making a collection with. Its an expensive hobby that leads to addiction.

Only thing is that a crate of vinyl gets quite damn heavy if you tend to move around a lot ;)

I'm without a TT at the moment, but would love to get a Rega next. e.g. http://www.rega.co.uk/rp1.html

Why that TT.

The Rega is expensive, you could also look at the Project range .

Seems like most here is after the sound and the sound quality.

The sad part and many will debate it, but it's fact.

Although it's old technology, some new advancements has allowed the information within those grooves to really be unleashed.

So these Crosley units really actually do no good except for making one feel nostalgic and it also adds to the hipster resumé .

The new advancements cost money and it's not uncommon to find a turntable setup in excess of R 500 k nowadays.

The pressings nowadays are sublime and the remasters of albums like Rumours re-pressed on 45 rpm. is a step in the right direction for a new musical golden era .

Plus side is really good quality music, the downside is that it's not cheap .

I pulled out a vinyl to play a few months ago ELO.

My friends son saw it his face, and then these words came out

"Wow what a big CD !!!!!!"

made my day

There's something magical about slipping the needle into the groove and hearing the music emerge.

  • I had my albums memorised by tiny sounds that occurred at certain places.
  • Folding out double LPs: YES album artwork, Nine Tonight by Bob Seger- with each track that had a corresponding real, quality, material sew-on patch, A3 foldout posters.
  • The massive Coral speakers we had in the 70s and 80s.

Yup: vinyl has a warmth and context that CDs never will.

Love vinyl. Have many original prints from my collection in the 80's and have recently bought several new 180gram prints. But I've had to put that on hold since starting cycling as a hobby...

Apart from my 5.1 system I have a separate stereo system which includes my 21 year old Technics amp and CD changer, worked almost every single day since 1994 and never skipped a beat. Need to upgrade at some point including a new TT.

Whats a decent setup for a 9m2 room?

I heard a square room is the least desirable shape for sound quality - but that may have been for sound recording rather than listening to music.

Its the best of the budget models - good reviews, solid build and looks sleek :)

I sometimes wish there was a shop that was a coffee roaster / microbrewery / music store / audio gear / other gadgets / camping gear / bike workshop....

AND MILES AWAY FROM ANY MALL.

Wyatt....what's your opinion of the sl1200...they were the bees knees back in the day. We used them at my university radio station back then and the clarity was incredible then...I see you can pick them up for 2 to 4k second hand

My Dad bought a Lenco L75 when they arrived in SA in 1968. 20 years ago he passed it on to me, well used. But with a whole lot of house moves, it got into a state of disrepair.

Last year his 'modern' turntable gave up the ghost and after waiting for parts for six months was pronounced dead. To coincide with his 70th birthday and retirement I gave the Lenco a rebuild and returned it to him.

It is not a Linn but the warmth of the sound, the nostalgia of music and the history of the table make listening to it just magical.
