Fast rolling but strong tyres needed

Do you have the ground control or the S works ground control?

So you are going to keep it at 2.1 at the back but just change it to 2.3 in the front?

Doesn't the grid have more drag on them?

I think you misunderstand the concept slightly. You cant expect the fastest rolling rubber, but tons of grip and side wall protection for rock gardens. There will be compromises. You wont feel "drag"...and if you do...up your pressure, coz if I'm going through single track and rock gardens....I'm concentrating on not losing my life...not tyre drag..and I dont feel tyre drag when doing that type of riding...only place u might feel drag is on flat roads...and there you don't need low pressures anyway...

I have the normal Ground Controls, will keep my back tyre which is 2.1, and just get a new 2.3 for the front for grip.

S-Works tyres are poor...they are lighter, but they have crappy sidewalls, and IMO are not meant for very technical riding.

one thing to remember is that you can have the toughest tyres with the lowest drag and the lowest rolling resistance and best grip - you still got to pedal it.

I think some good suggestions have been made with the Schwalbe and Conti tyres mentioned.

if the fastest is what you want then get conti race king 2.0 front and rear - I cannot guarantee any results when things get trickey though

Specialized Fast Trak Control - Roll fast, light, decent traction and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. You can almost buy two for the price of one Racing Ralph.

All above are good .I have used all of them .My current combo would be Vittorio Saguaro rear and conti x-king protection front .The best rolling ,strongest tyre is a Maxxis crossmark Lust ,but the grip for a front tyre is not good and they are heavy

Until you hit the mud...then fast track on the front becomes scary...

What is the combo that you refer to?

DO NOT buy the s-works tyres, as they have notoriously thin sidewalls (to keep weight down).

A spez combo that works well is fast track at the rear and ground control front.  However, Spez tyres (even Controls) are not very tough - the new "Grid" models may change that.

Interesting read, didn't realise the Racing Ralph tyre was such a fast rolling tyre.

Would be cool if the specialized tyres were on this as well.

Is any tyre not scary in muddy conditions on the front

Some are less scary...Fast tracks are fast rolling for dry conditions...and you sometimes will not even find it in the Spez stores during winter. Last year I called to enquire about the Fast tracks, they only had the Captain Controls and Ground controls during winter

Had a look at the Cape Epic tyre choice thread - seems the schwalbe racing ralphs are a popular choice. Snakeskin version - they so damn costly though.

Confused what tyres to run now for jhb2c.

Looking at all the characteristics people want in one tyre based on responses:

Light, fast rolling, durable, impenetrable sidewalls, great grip on rocky descents, sticks like glue on hardpack, excellent in muddy condition and sheds mud rapidly, equally good on front and back wheels, and not to forget, cheap.

Now if only the useless tyre producers can get finaly get it right. How hard can it be ?

A good tire choice will be the following:

Vittoria Barzo, Saguaro, Peyote

Hi,

I am looking for MTB 29er tyres that are fast rolling but are strong as well. i don't want to puncture every 5 minutes, especially when going over rocks. I will be purchasing Mavic crossmax SL tubesless wheels.

What would you guys suggest? I doesn't have to be Specialized.

I was thinking of going with the 2 models but read too many negative reviews on them, the first getting alot of punctures:

  • S-WORKS GROUND CONTROL 2BLISS READY
  • FAST TRAK CONTROL 2BLISS READY

I'm not a pro but I just want to ride faster, I currently use the Specialized ground control tyres but I feel there might be alot of drag.

I ride a lot of trail that consists of rocky sections, singletrack and long gravel roads.

Thanks

Brendan

Bio - don't mess around, just get the GEAX Saguaro and smile and wave all the way. Yes, they are a little heavier than the tyre discussed before, but you will not be sorry, I ride a Spez Camber and I did not like the their standard Spez tyres as they are just not hardy enough. Go GEAX
