4years of cycling ,no knee problems ....2weeks of running and my good knee is messed up .

I would put good money on it that you took your cycling fitness through to running and went too far too soon.

baby steps, its the right way to get into it.

a question please....im at the 5km mark now after running for around a month...and im wondering if it is it better to build up distance up to 10km, even if it means a walk jog slow kinda workout or rather run at a good pace and slowly add the distance at a decent pace??...

From personal experience the building up at a decent pace method works best.

The first time I went from 5-10km I did the slow run/walk thing and picked up shin splints for my efforts.

General rule of thumb is increase your distance by 10% per week. You're starting from a low base so you can probably add 1km per week until 10% is greater than that.

Agreed with the guys - once you're up to doing 5, just increase gradually. I took ages to get to 5 and from there just kept "running". Listen to the body.

And just keep going... I was on a lekker run yesterday and said to the guy I was running with - unreal to thing that last year this time I was not even doing 10k on the road. Yesterday we did a 24k trail run with enough elevation, single-tracks, started off in the dark running with lights... AWESOME! Don't be discouraged by the fact that you feel like you're starting off.

Thanks SeaBee... I never thought id even get to 5km...but it does help having a target, mine is Two Oceans 21km and friends that are vvv encouraging and don't make me feel like "bleh its only 5km"  (they all run double figured runs every day).

I've find that once I've pushed past the 3 km mark my legs are happy and the last 2 km are much easier time to push to 6 km now.  I also do 30 - 45 mins spinning prior to running so least the knees are warmed up..

My aim was exactly the same. I started, then I decided I'll enter for a half, mine was Safari half. And then happened to get an Oceans half entry.

Don't get discouraged. You'll join them in "double digits" soon enough. The fact that they run, means they had to have gone through the same (same with cycling!) and it helps to get some advise and support.

I'm also new into the running, started about two months ago.  Doing a 2km up to 3km once or twice a week if time allows.  Did a nice 5km on Saturday and feeling quite good and comfortable.  Will slowly work my way up!  Not too worried about speed at the moment, rather on time my feet.

I'm still wogging but my periods of running are getting longer. Making it a mission to run at least twice a week. Have built up just over 3kms in the 30 mins I am on the treadmill - I always warm up for the first 5-10mins. And then yesterday I only did 5 mins of walking in the rest of my 25mins [emoji4] Note I have never run before I started recently so I am determined to go slow and build up. I do the park run on the Saturday or 5kms in the gym if I can't - that still takes me at least 40mins but also gives me a chance to work on hills. I actually have no goals other than a supplement to bike riding and a time alternative in the gym before work coupled with some rowing and circuit.

Yesterday when I felt like I could just keep going was awesome! [emoji4]

I can't believe I'm about to type what I am...

I'm contemplating doing a "race" ....

I'm comfortably doing 5km in around 30 mins now, that's a relatively flat 5km,  but it feels good on the legs... Running must be really bad for you, because it's almost drug like for me now.. and I sometimes *cough*..*looks around to see who could be listening* crave it

So a 10(ish)km event should do the trick, but I have ZERO knowledge of such things... any suggestions? (Jozi)

I found that running on the road is a lot more fun and one tends to run quicker. Im lucky I live and run in an area that is only smallholdings with dirt roads, so I dont have to worry about traffic or the hard tar. Im 46 years old and also not run, as such, before...did a couple of trail runs when I used running for cross training years ago, so im wary of any ache and pain...and sticking with the slowly slowly way...must admit, its a little addictive this running.. ^_^

I miss runing a lot, riding also for that matter. Heaven knows what I did to my ankle but it has been hurting like a mofo for almost two months. I can hardly put any weight on it. Still searching for a diagnosis... Enjoy it guys/girls.

I have taken my running to the gym treadmill now. Seems to be much easier on the knee.

I am doing 20 mins at 10km/h without too much effort. Last 5 mins i start to take a bit of strain - but I finish with no problems.

Main thing is no knee problems which is great.

I have found my stamina on the MTB has improved big time. Did 60km last weekend with 20km being Modder green. Was a breeze - for the first time.
