Just finished my first park run. Added a bit of walking before and after to just let my puppy chill the fk out (he gets a bit excited) and cos he is also carrying an injury... back leg muscle just tends to pull every now and again. 7.63km total. Feeling good...

I always walk from my car/home a few hundred meters and stop running a few hundred meters to walk back to the car/home.

Maybe its the age? But whatever it is, I just do it and somehow feel that little ... loosener is what I need to get into it at the start and like the ending to just cool down a little and ease my breathing, etc. So ... walking before and after I think is great. And you don't need the puppy as an excuse. :whistling: :whistling: :whistling:

yeah, I know what you mean. In this case, the Park Run starts and ends about 1km into the greenbelt, so it's easy to do the walk before and after.

And no - the puppy really did need to be looked after. He's lost an amazing amount of fitness over the past year or so. Running buddy for me...

Here is a nice indication of how to build up slowly. Wish i had it when i started out. Its a training program designed by Coach Lindsey Parry. He is the coach of Caroline Wostmann. The female winner of this years Two Oceans and Comrades.

This is designed to take a novice to a half marathon in 24 weeks and if followed correctly injury free.

Just logged this on my Fenix. Looking forward to the next few weeks, and hitting the target.

I had a Dave Spence (well known coach around the Cape - Ex Pinelands AC coach)  program I used for running a sub 6 Two Oceans. It was a 15 week program that required you able to run 2hrs easy before you can start the program. It worked a charm for me. If I ever get to that mileage again, I will revert back to following that program.

What I like about your 24 week program (haven't read the thing yet) but the period sounds good. Biggest problem with running is most go Too Far, Too Fast, Too Soon and suffer the injuries later because the body has not adapted to the new regimen properly.

Patience bring long term rewards. Success with that Half Marathon.

Try running standing up instead of on  all four's :P

Just kidding well done

A question for you more experienced road runners:

Out of these shoes, which brand/pair would you recommend for someone who hits the road 3 days a week?

One of my resolutions for 2016 is losing at least another 5kg's, and I'm in the market for a cheapish to average pair of running tekkies.

Thanks.

You really should go to a sportsmans warehouse, where they make you run on a treadmill for all of 20 seconds, from this they can tell you exactly which type of shoe you need (Stability or neutral). For myself i always thought i ran "normally" but turns out i have club foot apparently when i run so for this i need stability shoes where it has a hard piece of plastic to support my arch of my foot.

Ps. If you are in CT, go see Vladimir Kotov, he runs his own shop by century city called Kotov's corner. He has run and won many a long distance race. Really awesome guy also.

cheap shoes and more medical bills ??

I also decided to get into running and did a 3.3km on a Monday morning in a pair of average New Balance that I use for gym.

Then decided to go to a running shop later that day and get a proper fit done, and tried on about 6 pairs before I walked out of there.

The assistant finished 22nd at the 2014 comrades so knew what he was talking about... and he threw me the line - cheap shoes and more medical bills ??

I also did not want to spend too much on a pair but ended up with the Asics Cumulus 17.

amazed at the difference a good pair of runners can make. Started off last monday, struggling to do 3.5km in my New Balance "sneakers", this morning I did my first 5km in 34minutes.

I know I have to build this up slowly, but having played soccer from the age of 6, I think this helps and my cycling fitness surely plays a part.

By the way, the reason they say "Build up slowly" has nothing to do with fitness, its all about the impact that running puts on joints and ligaments. Hence why they say never go more than your previous weeks 10%.

Good luck with your running, enjoy it.

I understand that after doing 2 x 7km runs last week with just a days rest between. But I am enjoying the wind through my hair at the moment and will continue to push on with my 2-3 runs a week.
